General

  • Quiet and peaceful back-to-basics site at a 450 year old country pub
  • Food made from scratch using local produce where possible
  • Just off the Icknield Way and 15 minutes' drive from Newmarket

Sometimes escaping to the country is just the thing to do... come and do it at The Red Lion in Cambridgeshire, on a back-to-basics site with an acclaimed Grade II-listed pub a few minutes away.

The pub is known in the area for its food, with almost everything made from scratch using the freshest of produce, local or home-grown where possible. {acked lunches and drinks are available if you're here to walk the Icknield Way, and if you'd like a hot breakfast before you move on to your next stop, the team can do that too. For eating in, just let them know if you'd like to book for lunch or dinner.

The Red Lion is a peaceful site in a wildlife haven, with ducks and moorhens on the pond, a resident owl flitting over the adjacent field, and pheasants and partridges hanging out in the front garden (go to see for yourself: the garden is free for guests to use at all times). Pitch up in the quiet area among trees and hedges behind the pub, to listen to the wood pigeons at dusk and drift off to sleep in a remote and rural setting.

The site is at the far end of a small village, under 15 minutes' drive from Newmarket and half an hour from Cambridge. It's dog friendly: the entire property is fenced and chicken wired.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Lovely couple who run the pub and camp site! Very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The breakfast was stunning.
We'd certainly stay again if returning and looking for camping in the area!

    Disliked:

As they were open about in the site details - there is no wash/shower block, but they will put your washing up through their dish washer, and the loos are fine.

Morris couldn’t be more welcoming. He settled us in well and offered help with everything from local knowledge to the washing up.
The pub itself is a great little spot and the location is a perfect balance of countryside with easy access to Cambridge by car (park and ride).
Already excited for our next stay.

    Disliked:

It was a little difficult not having an outdoor tap but Morris couldn’t have been more happy to fill water butts from the kitchen.

The pub owner, Morris, was extremely helpful, friendly and hospitable both before and during my stay. He went out of his way to offer recommendations regarding the facilities, taxi and local amenities. He even put my bottled water in the fridge for me so it was cold when I got back to my tent pitch int he evening. They were also able to cook me a full english breakfast the following morning, which really hit the spot! The camping pitch itself was basic but exactly what I was looking for, toilets were available inside the pub but no showers are available currently.

The Red Lion does exactly what it says of the tin. It is a no frills 6 pitch site in a small field at the back of a Pub that uses the Pub's facilities rather than have a dedicated toilet/shower block. There is no access for vehicles onto the camping area, but it's just a short walk.

All of this is on the website and if you read and accept before arriving then this is the perfect little campsite for exploring or passing through the Newmarket area. The owners are lovely and very accommodating and the food is spot on (I can thoroughly recommend the Fish and Chips!).

Thank you, very much, for leaving this review - especially for pointing out we are what we say we are, and some of our shortcomings, that we're aware of. We can see how we might make it easier unpacking to get around to the rear without the car having access and will try to sort that. If it stops raining every other day as we try to develop our site for the rest of this summer, and the local Grade II Building planning permission gang that work one day a week get on with giving us permission for showers etc, we'll hopefully be something much better sooner rather than later. We very much enjoyed having you. Thanks for staying.

This is a really peaceful place to stay for a few nights and the pub has a great selection of drinks and food at all times of the day. Morris and Gwyn couldn’t be more helpful and know the area really well. I stayed for work as hotels in the nearby towns were expensive and fully booked but I found I had a better experience since the weather was perfect for camping and the location very relaxing. I would definitely come back to the site for a holiday and explore the local area more.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thank you! We enjoyed having all of you here, so very much. The Scottish lads had a second night with us and did tell us that parking up and using their folding bicycles will apparently beat your folding car tops down there every time, when the airshow is on, and they did some wheelies as they went past all of you. Was also good to hear from them you all met up down there a few times during the event as well. What you won't know, that levels the North/South rivalry out a wee bit, is, they couldn't find their car afterwards ........ But they did made it back here in the end. We'll definitely look forward to seeing you again.

It was lovely watching the sunset and listening to the Owls and Pheasants.

    Disliked:

Just starting up so no gas appliances only elec. No hook up available.

Some noise like a generator or extractor unit from Pub disturbed sleep.

Toilet quite basic, no mirror. No washing facilities. No washing up facility.

Lots of thistles in grass, so be careful if you have young children.

Car can't be parked next to tent, have to carry everything from front car park.

From the manager...

Thanks for leaving your 6/10 review. I'm incredibly sorry we clearly weren't the type of camping site you were looking for. I'm also rather disappointed to read some of this though.

Pitchup is a great website, and we very much hope you'll use them again. Any camping site that lists with them has to complete a very detailed and very comprehensive questionnaire. That then allows any prospective camper to select from over 100 tick boxes of what is important to them, and find a site that will actually meet their personal needs. I do however know that we've been 100% honest about what we are, and what we are not, when we filled that out.

You certainly were pitched not far from our kitchen, but the kitchen extractor fan is always off by 9, which would be while you were watching the sunset - and the Tawny Owls weren't out until around 9:45, so I'm not sure where the noise you've referred to came from? We don't have a generator.

I am sorry I hadn't replaced the mirror in the Ladies toilet on the evening you were with us, and that you didn't find the rather large one immediately outside the Ladies toilet door.

I'm afraid I can't respond further to your basic toilet and washing facilities comment. I wish we had spoken so I knew the point you were trying to make here. Our ladies toilet has the expected toilet, a hand sink, paper towels, extra toilet rolls, a soap dispenser, a waste basket, a sanitary basket and plastic cups for mouth rinsing. I am somewhat at a loss to understand what else we're missing here? 01638 508707, do please call and explain so we can maybe take care of this?

We cut our paddock grass at least once a week. There are no children camping here. We clearly advertise we're an adult only site. Being surrounded by 1500 acres of wild countryside that isn't cut once a week, things will find their way over here and grow I'm afraid. I'm sure you saw the 3 1/2 foot high wild paddock weeds over our West fence we can do nothing about since we don't own it.

The washing up facility comment was helpful. I don't recall seeing you cooking anything, by the way? We've now written a five page information sheet we can give to people on arrival. So thank you for this comment too. Included in it we've mentioned we have a commercial dishwasher that takes all of two minutes to cycle and we are our campers washing up facility. Had you come back in after pitching your tent, as you said you would, Gwyn would have covered that, and many other things.

I cannot recall whether the Pitchup questionnaire covers whether cars can be parked tent-side or not. I think it does, in which case we'd have ticked the they cannot box, but I'll contact them the day after tomorrow, since clearly that is something important too, so thank you for that comment as well.

Morris.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We thoroughly enjoyed having you both with us. I know our listing makes clear that we don't have showers yet but I don't know if it states that cars can't be driven round to the paddock so we'll look into that tomorrow since it's clearly something we maybe need to be able to better communicate.
