General

  • Quiet and peaceful back-to-basics site at a 450 year old country pub
  • Food made from scratch using local produce where possible
  • Just off the Icknield Way and 15 minutes' drive from Newmarket

Sometimes escaping to the country is just the thing to do... come and do it at The Red Lion in Cambridgeshire, on a back-to-basics site with an acclaimed Grade II-listed pub a few minutes away.

The pub is known in the area for its food, with almost everything made from scratch using the freshest of produce, local or home-grown where possible. Packed lunches and drinks are available if you're here to walk the Icknield Way, and if you'd like a hot breakfast before you move on to your next stop, the team can do that too. For eating in, just let them know if you'd like to book for lunch or dinner.

The Red Lion is a peaceful site in a wildlife haven, with ducks and moorhens on the pond, a resident owl flitting over the adjacent field, and pheasants and partridges hanging out in the front garden (go to see for yourself: the garden is free for guests to use at all times). Pitch up in the quiet area among trees and hedges behind the pub, to listen to the wood pigeons at dusk and drift off to sleep in a remote and rural setting.

The site is at the far end of a small village, under 15 minutes' drive from Newmarket and half an hour from Cambridge. It's dog friendly: the entire property is fenced and chicken wired.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Warm, friendly welcome and helpful, efficient service throughout our stay. Excellent food served in very generous quantities and good beer/cider. Pub superbly clean. Good view towards Cambridge from camping ground. Great location in pretty countryside with some beautiful villages nearby. A11 only a few miles away but well out of sight and hearing of the pub. We would very happily come here again.

I could not fault my stay at the Red Lion. Morris and Gwen were very hospitable and made every effort to ensure my stay was enjoyable. The location is great with lovely views and an abundance of local walks in the vicinity. The home cooked food in the pub was delicious. The only draw back is the lack of shower facilities, but this is clearly advertised and I understood this at the time of booking.

Really enjoyed staying here. Loved the simplicity of the pitches. We were well spaced from other campers. The owners were so lovely and helpful. They went the extra mile with regards to the COVID-19 guidelines- we both felt super safe there. Food was lovely too. Would defo recommend to anyone travelling to this part of the country

Thank you - especially for saying you felt super safe here. Safety was suddenly an unexpected big thing we've had to think about recently, and it's just really good for us to read that what we've done has been noticed, and let you relax a little more while you were with us.

A quiet well kept and level site in a wonderfully sunny location surrounded by flower beds and sitting behind the Red Lion pub. The camping field is small but well positioned and you have a key code for the pub toilet at night. This actually works very well. The hosts are friendly and extremely helpful plus they serve a mean fish and chips at the pub, what's not to like ?
We only stayed one night as we were en route to Cambridge but Covid measures were good and we both felt very safe. Can highly recommend

    Disliked:

In an ideal world a dedicated toilet/shower would be brilliant (hence the 4 stars rather than 5) but if you know in advance that there is no shower, it isn't a problem.

From the manager...

Thanks! We needed a wee bit of time to adjust to being recently open again to see how things went and needed to make sure there wouldn't be four men heading for the gents at the same time, hence the one single toilet. We have now opened up another two toilets inside just for campers so they now have three available at the end of the day once the pub has cleared out, and again in the morning. And while we didn't have a shower at all last year, it is noted on our listing that due to the whole Covid thing, there wouldn't be one available this year, and is also why we're not making our own rental tent with beds etc available either. It's all an adventure for all of us right now! We're really, really glad, you felt safe with us. Thank you for saying that. It will matter to a lot of other people right now.

The owners, so nice and chatty and amazingly willing to do anything to make me happy despite running the whole pub. The garden is only going to get better as the spent lockdown wisely planting flowers and veg. The sky’s were great for stars with so few lights on nearby. Despite the front garden full of customers the pitches outback were still so quiet I didn’t even realise they had opened. Also great location for Cambridge, Newmarket and iwm duxford.

    Disliked:

The odd spiky weed in the grass ie I am really struggling to find fault!

From the manager...

Thanks for this! Covid back story - our mower broke. Send it to us in Wales and we'll fix it. How long? 10 weeks. Bought a new one. Lasted 20 minutes. Sent that one to Welsh Wales too and said refund our money please. Spent twice as much money on a different one we can get fixed locally if ever needed. Urgent delivery - when? We dispatch within 2 days. Courier took 7 days to get it to us and it finally arrived the day before we re-opened. So we cut our out of control grass down higher than we usually would, the day before you arrived. It'll get a proper haircut tomorrow. Thoroughly enjoyed having you with us for the weekend and would be delighted to see you again. Thank you.

Peaceful camping behind a pub with friendly owners and delicious food08/02/2020

The pitches are behind an old pub. It's a well maintained grass area. Quiet with only the noises of local wildlife. The pitches are well spaced out, and it's an adult only site so there wasn't any disturbance from other campers. The pub (that you're camping behind) had clean and well maintained toilet / bathroom facilities. We also had a dinner at the pub which was delicious. We'd definitely recommend it!

The owners were very warm and friendly. They filled our water, and put our washing up through their dishwasher. They also gave us great advice about the local area and places to go walking.

The pub and camping area are perfect for sitting around in the sunshine, enjoying the countryside. The site is also close to a few villages, with shops, other pubs, etc. There are also a lot of walking routes in the area and things to explore.

As they were open about in the site details - there is no wash/shower block, but they will put your washing up through their dish washer, and the loos are fine.

Morris couldn’t be more welcoming. He settled us in well and offered help with everything from local knowledge to the washing up.
The pub itself is a great little spot and the location is a perfect balance of countryside with easy access to Cambridge by car (park and ride).
Already excited for our next stay.

    Disliked:

It was a little difficult not having an outdoor tap but Morris couldn’t have been more happy to fill water butts from the kitchen.
