  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes
Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great facilities
Clean site and facilities
Well signposted
Easy to get to
Dog friendly (all dogs were well behaved and tethered/under control)
Easy to access more areas in the Peak District.

Disliked Although there’s a ‘quiet time after 10pm’ there were still quite a few with loud voices after this time, I know it’s camping in the middle of nowhere but it would have been nice if they were a little quieter.

Not sure how they can do it but potentially policing the amount of alcohol may be worth looking into - I went toilet at 11:30pm, there were a few older men who were ‘p*ssed as f*ck’ and one of them had a huge cut on his face that was pouring blood, although it’s a family site I’m aware that there may have still been kids that could have seen this.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great location. Owner is very polite and always checking in to see if we are okay.

Disliked Struggled with shower space as a single mum with two children it was a squeeze to get everyone in.

Could do with some shelves in toilets to put your things on when brushing teeth etc.

Liked Location for walks is perfect, we stayed 2 nights and did walks around Bakewell and the Monsal trail.
The facilities were clean and plenty of them.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
We had a lovely relaxing time there even though the weather wasn’t on our side.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great central location for all the spots in the peaks that we wanted to visit, the staff were so considerate and accommodating and happy to help make our trip easier in anyway possible, and had many great recommendations for local takeaways or restaurants and local activities, there were plenty of toilet and showers so we were never waiting to use the facilities.
The grounds were always kept clean and clear of rubbish and any additional information was well signposted for example due to recent dry weather no fires or BBQs so as to prevent wildfires
Will definitely come back again

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great facilities
Clean showers and toilets
Although plenty of campers, plenty of space for everyone
Friendly owners
Close to Bakewell, Buxton and lots of lovely walks

Disliked Although not a fault of the owners of this campsite, the loud music from a neighbouring campsite was a disturbance on my sleep (was going on way into the late night/early morning)

Local attractions

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
