Just like the movies… - Pitchup on location

Sep 13 2012 Posted by Lewis Shields

As the summer winds to an end, Pitchup.com likes to reflect on its camping highlights and inspirations and so it polled fellow camping and caravan lovers on where they draw their inspiration for trips, whatever the season.

Here is the low-down on where’s hot to trot, why, and where to stay so you can see for yourself as the seasons change:

  • Head to the Highlands and take a trip to Rosslyn Chapel, just outside of Edinburgh. This beautiful 15th century masterpiece is the home of a fair few speculative theories regarding the Knights Templar and Freemasonry, and is the setting for part of Dan Brown's 2003 novel The Da Vinci Code, and for part of the subsequent 2006 film of the same name.

Stay just a few miles down the road in the cosy Kocoons at Harvieston Huts. Set in the grounds of Kirkhill Mansion, the huts are ideal for beating the variable Scottish weather at its own game, where open fires are welcomed so guests can enjoy a spot of campfire cooking. The Kocoons sleep two adults and are priced from £18 per night.

Or, you could pitch up to the cabins at the aptly named Adventure in the Meadow, where the outdoor hot tubs provide a great setting for warming those cockles after a long day’s exploring. Guests will wake up to countryside views, but are just thirty minutes down the road from Edinburgh. Camping cabins sleeping two adults are priced from £15 per night.
  • Exploring the area around Ben Nevis proved popular with the punters, who applauded the campsites at the foot of the Ben as the ideal location for venturing up the mountain. As the backdrop for such epic films as Rob Roy and Braveheart, visitors will find it hard not to be inspired by the stunning landscape.

At Ledgowan Lodge, guests (and canine companions) can pitch their tents all year round at the foot of the majestic mountain, in the grounds of a three-star country house in the Scottish Highlands. Campers can take advantage of the bar and restaurant available and can ensure they’re still in the loop with the site’s internet access and charging facilities. The friendly owners will even pick guests up from public transport, so no lugging of gear necessary. Pitches are priced from £10 per night.
  • Featured in The French Lieutenant's Woman and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, The Cob, at Lyme Regis is possibly the most famous harbour wall in the UK, steeped in character and history. Amble along in the steps of others, before exploring the beautiful coastal town of Lyme Regis, known affectionately as ‘The Pearl of Dorset’.

Hedgehog Corner is a great base for a visit to West Dorset, and, coincidentally, the nearest campsite to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage HQ. This adult-only site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is just two miles from Lyme Regis. Sensible footwear is required for dewy mornings, as there are no paths through the grass at this peaceful site. There is, however, a great local pub. Pitches are priced from £15 per night.
