  • Cosy shepherd's hut at a 400-acre family farm in Eryri/Snowdonia
  • In the foothills of Cadair Idris; direct access to the Mawddach Trail
  • Self-contained hut with ensuite bathroom, kitchen and barbecue
You know you’re booking into a place with a good bit of personality when you learn that the owners have a pet sheep called Britney Shears… The place in question is Abergwynant Farm Glamping, a family-run Gwynedd business that’s been welcoming guests to Eryri/Snowdonia National Park for more than 70 years. Current owner Richard started running the place in 2020, taking over from his nan Doris (although she still plays an active part in keeping the lovely gardens in bloom throughout the year). It’s not just Britney that you’ll meet at the farm – other residents include horses and a Highland cow called Bonnie, who’s particularly partial to custard creams. They’re all lucky enough to live in this gorgeous farm, which spreads across 400 acres of land and takes in lakes, forests and gold mines, all set in the foothills of Cadair Idris (the second-highest mountain in Wales). Keen to see more? There’s direct road-free access to the Mawddach Trail for easy walks or bike rides to Barmouth, Dolgellau or Fairbourne. Handily, there’s a pub about 40 minutes’ walk along the trail for a bit of refreshment too. Back at base you’ll be staying in a cute sheep-themed shepherd’s hut called the Woolly Wagon, which has been kitted out as a cosy glamping unit with a double bed, a single sofa bed, an ensuite shower room and a kitchen area (with fridge, cooker, microwave, kettle and toaster). Towels and bed linen are provided, as are useful things like a TV and heating. Outside, you’ll have a barbecue, a firepit (with firewood) and outdoor furniture – all handy things to have for an evening of stargazing in this dark skies area.

Local attractions

Once you’ve meandered along the Mawddach Trail, you might like to set your sights on a bigger challenge by climbing Cadair Idris – Wales’ second-highest mountain is within walking distance of the farm. If mountain bikes are more your style, you’ll want to head for Coed y Brenin Forest Park (15 minutes’ drive), known as one of the country’s top mountain bike sites. Of course, you might just want to take it easy instead – in which case you can follow walking trails from Dolgellau (10 minutes) or ride the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog (40 minutes) up to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Alternatively, stick around at the coast for the lovely sandy beaches of Fairbourne (10 minutes) and Barmouth (20 minutes, linked by a short ferry across the estuary or head up to Harlech Castle (40 minutes), in a spectacular clifftop spot high above the dunes below. A little further north is Portmeirion (40 minutes), an Italian-style village with colourful houses and acres of subtropical garden to explore.
