  • Relaxed site on the edge of the Blackdown Hills and close to M5
  • Exeter, Exmoor and Jurassic Coast within 45 minutes' drive
  • Dogs welcome on site; Wellington shops and pubs 20 minutes' walk
Grab yourself a little patch of the Somerset countryside with a stay at Apache Camps. This relaxed site is on the edge of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lovely rural views up towards the hills. The rural views and surroundings are fabulous, but that’s not all you’ll get with this location – the site is also about 20 minutes’ walk from Wellington town centre, putting plenty of pubs, restaurants and shops within easy reach, as well as attractions like a cinema and swimming pool. And on top of that, there’s also splendidly easy access from the M5 (about five minutes’ drive away), making journeys in and out as stress-free as can be. All of the above adds up to an excellent spot for a stopover on a long journey to/from the West Country, or a place to base yourselves for a longer stint of exploring this part of the world, filling your days with rural walks, scenic bike rides and day trips to Exeter, Exmoor or the Jurassic Coast. Life is fairly simple at this farm site, with just flushing toilets and hot showers on the facilities front. It’s a laidback setup though, so you’ll be allowed to pick your own pitch and bring along a barbecue to cook your meals on. Dogs are welcome to join you for a break here, and you should find plenty of places nearby to take them out for a good walk.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Close to route Plenty of space

Disliked: No signage to indicate that the field was the campsite only able to confirm this after driving around and then ringing up. Over priced at £20 for 2 for the night. No washing up facilities, no water tap and no light even in the toilet. Basically paying for a field with a toilet shack and shower. Noise from the M5 was persistent

From the manager: Hi Teresa, Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your stay. The toilets all have eco friendly lights on PIR sensors that automatically turn them on and off. All of our facilities are listed on here. Being toilets and shower. Being a pop up campsite we are limited to ether infrastructure we can put in but believe we have the right set up for what the majority of our customers like /want. As for the traffic noise I believe it must of just been extremely busy being a sunny bank holiday with lots of events in Cornwall. Again apologies you didn’t enjoy your stay. Al

Lovely location, great view. Would definitely stay again.…

Local attractions

You may well spot some wildlife while you’re out roaming around the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty – but if you’d like to be sure of seeing your favourite animals you’ll need to plan trips to places like Stoke Wood Alpacas (20 minutes’ drive), The Donkey Sanctuary (40 minutes) or Yarak Birds of Prey (25 minutes). If you’re after something a bit more challenging, take yourselves to Diggerland Devon (15 minutes) to get to grips with various diggers (or use the go-karts and soft play area), try out the amazing video simulators at Apex Race Centre (15 minutes) or visit the Devon Activity Centre (35 minutes) for archery, foot golf, quad biking and other adventurous antics. For trips a little further afield, head to the Jurassic Coast to see Beer Quarry Caves and stroll around Sidmouth (both 45 minutes), explore the city streets of Exeter (40 minutes) or head north into Exmoor National Park (40 minutes) for a whole lot of lovely scenery to wander through.
