  • Peaceful family-run farm over 40 acres in west Devon
  • Overlooking Dartmoor a short walk from watersports at Roadford Lake
  • Fresh farm produce for sale, communal campfire and private bathrooms
Communal campfires, farm produce for sale, a menagerie to meet and wide open space all around… you and your small sorts will likely love Devon's Oak Tree Lane. Set on a smallholding over 40 acres of pasture and woodland between Launceston and Okehampton on the Devon/Cornwall border, Oak Tree is a family-run farm with pigs, sheep, goats and ex-battery farm chickens now merrily scratching around outdoors. Young wannabe farmers are welcome to wander much of the farm and help feed the animals during their stay – attention might also be gratefully received by farm cat Snowy… The farm's location is fab, overlooking Dartmoor National Park and within three-quarters of a mile of the biggest watersports lake in the south-west at Roadford Lake; as it's right in the middle of Devon, you can be at either north or south coasts in under an hour. Oak Tree Lane sells its own produce including fresh free-range eggs and a range of pork joints, meat cuts, sausages and bacon from the rare breed free-range pigs. It has a communal campfire for guitar sessions, singalongs or just contemplating the flames with a cuppa or a tipple. Amenities here are in the form of a private bathroom for each group (with toilet, sink and power shower, all cleaned daily), as well as kitchens. These facilities may or may not be contained within your unit, but in any case they'll be just a few steps away. As it's a working farm, Oak Tree Lane can't allow dogs (guide dogs excepted). Please note that the ground on site is undulating and naturally sloped in areas.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Phil and Sera went above and beyond to accommodate us and particularly helped us for part of our cycling. The location was beautiful and we wish we could have stayed longer. From the eight campsites we stayed at up and down the country, Oak Tree Lane was the best particularly with some stunning views. Would wholly recommend to anyone looking to camp in the area!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Such a warm welcome with fantastic correspondence throughout. Phil and Sera couldn't have done more. I can't recommend enough. The campsite is in a fantastically secluded spot. Set within their very well maintained farm, the campsite is very well looked after, and it looks out across a beautiful set of undulating hills that almost forms a valley. There are a couple of well built lodges, which have plenty of space between them all, and the area for tents is more than spacious with a hedgerow to help shelter from any wind, and then a small paddock to the side with lambs. The facilities are also really very good. Much better than most campsites I have visited, with individual bathrooms/showers, even when camping. They were very well built, immaculately clean, and the shower was as good as any you would have in a house or a hotel. I was staying as I was taking part in a triathlon event at Roadford Lake, and I would definitely stay again if I return for another race. In fact, I wish I hadn't made it such a short trip, as I would have loved to have stayed longer.

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Everything! The warm welcome, the scenery, the setting, the views, the friendly neighbours (sheep and cows) the well thought out site.... Lovely cabin with its own bathroom and kitchen complete with central heating for a colder evening. Covered porch area perfect for enjoying a coffee with a view even in the rain. Really lovely owners, obviously very passionate about what they have created here, a slice of heaven in Devon, thank you for a lovely relaxed few days, just perfect.

Disliked: Nothing.... Nothing to dislike

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We loved Oak Tree Lane. We pitched our tent at the top of the field to enjoy the stunning views over Dartmoor and the Devon countryside. The friendly welcome we received was lovely and Sera and Phil were so helpful. The site and facilities were the best we have experienced and we had a wonderful stay. To have our own private bathroom facilities kept to such an immaculate standard was very much appreciated. We can't wait to return.

Disliked: Nothing, we loved it all

2 bedroom cabin

Liked: As soon as we arrived, Sera was very friendly and welcoming. She was also accommodating of our late arrival following our long journey, taking the time to lead us to our lodge and giving us a tour of it. We stayed in one of the two bed lodges for two nights, which we found to be very homely. Included was a well equipped kitchenette, which was perfect for us, and a spacious bathroom with a large shower. The beds and linen were comfortable, and we were glad to have gas central heating in the lodge, as one of the mornings was particularly cold. The little we had a chance to see of the farm was lovely, including chickens and lots of sheep. The accommodation looks out onto one of the sheep holdings, which provided some entertaining and peaceful views all day long. The farm itself is nice and secluded, which only added to the serenity. The location of the farm was perfect for us being close to Cornwall as we were able to drive to the Eden project in roughly 40 minutes. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and found it relaxing and very peaceful, we would love to visit again in the future!

Disliked: Having to leave!

Local attractions

Oak Tree Lane's setting just off the A30 on the Devon/Cornwall border means it's under an hour from the varied terrain of the north and south Devon coasts as well as within easy reach of many top attractions of both counties. Within walking distance at three quarters of a mile is Roadford Lake, the biggest lake for watersports in the south west at over 730 acres. Sailing, windsurfing and kayaking are among the many options on the water here; on land, tackle high ropes, climbing and archery – or take things very easy and settle back to have a cream tea. You can be in Cornwall within 20 minutes, coming in via ancient Launceston a mile from the River Tamar, and driving across the county to Wadebridge and Bodmin Moor, or on to the coast at Tintagel, Boscastle or Port Isaac. The Eden Project is a pleasant drive across Bodmin Moor to St Austell; driving further along Cornwall's south coast will take you to Falmouth, and then onto the Lizard Peninsula on England's south-west tip. Several National Trust sites are within a short drive: have a look at the waterfall of Lydford Gorge, the working watermill Cotehele Mill and the house and estate of 13th-century Buckland Abbey near Yelverton.
