  • Peaceful family-run site near the beaches on Hayling Island
  • A 10-minute walk from Hayling Billy Trail; West beach 10 mins' drive
  • Off-grid dog-friendly site; farm shop and pub within walking distance
Heading to Hampshire’s Hayling Island with something simple and scenic in mind? You’ll certainly want to take a look at Croft Lane Green Camping, a quiet family-run site where the tree-lined pitches have been set up on the grazing paddocks of a working stables. Of course, you won’t actually be sharing the paddocks with the horses – you’ll see them on site but they reside away from the camping area (on arrival, you’ll note there are separate gates for the stables and the campsite). The pitching area is reserved for guests (families and dogs included), allowing plenty of space for everyone to spread out and set up a gazebo, awning, camping table and barbecue if they like. Pitches here are allocated ahead of arrival and have access to simple facilities like a water supply, two composting loos, a cold shower and a cold water sink. This is a generally off-grid site though, so you'll need to mostly bring your own gear (including portable chargers and a torch). The word ‘helpful’ crops up time and again in the reviews for this site, so do ask if you need a hand with anything. Croft Lane Green Camping is in a convenient location for all sorts of local amenities: there's a farm shop selling local produce half a mile away, and a small supermarket and a garage are 10 minutes' walk down the road. A 20-minute walk across the field takes you to nearby Northney Farm tea rooms, and several local pubs are also within strolling distance. Planning to stock up for your stay? Croft Lane Green Camping is about five minutes' drive from the nearest big supermarket.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked It's a nice place with pitches nicely lined alongside bushes and some trees which helps protect you from wind and rain. The host was very understanding when I arrived late, without letting him know my ETA and camping on the wrong pitch by mistake which was not assigned to me (once again, sorry!). The host was also very attentive and had shared a lot of information about the site, how to get here, what to do on arrival and to show me around. Overall very happy and I can see myself coming back here in the future.

From the manager: i totally understand that some of our messages might be missed and luckily as we are nearby we can come to show you where things are.
We allocate pitches as we try to organise the camping field so that we can accommodate different requests such as being near the play area if they have children or in a quieter place if they have an anxious dog, or a ensure that two pitches are together.
do hope that you come back again too

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked It was quite, I liked the eco aspects of the site . Friendly owner very helpful.

Disliked Hard to find ,needed a bigger sign on gate. A little more expensive than I usually pay. For just a field.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am sorry that you found the site difficult to find. Usually people can find the campsite by following the instructions or what three words.
However I have taken your advice and will be ordering a larger sign for people to find it easier to find the site.
I appreciate that your view it as just a field but we think it offers more by having the play area and a large space where people can play games. But again it depends on what you are looking for in a campsite and ours is for those wanting quiet and relaxation with access to lots of things to do nearby.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We absolutely adored the horses, the island’s seclusion, and the slow internet. It was the perfect way to unplug from the daily hustle and bustle. The place was immaculate, with a composting loo, shower, and water taps. Everything was clean and well-maintained. The landlady was incredibly friendly and helpful, making our stay truly memorable.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great location. Back to basics with compost loos and cold shower but actually loved the cold shower out in nature (there are walls but no roof and it is under a willow tree so so pretty). The swings and slide were a huge hit with our toddler - great to have that for kids.

Local attractions

Hayling Island’s main draw is surely the beaches – and you’ll be well placed for those here. West beach (10 minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ cycle) is the most popular of the lot, with a long sandy stretch and separate areas for swimming and windsurfing. To see more of the island’s coastline, walk or cycle along the Hayling Billy Trail (10 minutes’ walk away), running along a five-mile traffic-free path, or take a train ride with the Hayling Light Railway Trust (10 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere on the island, wander around Hayling Island Nature Reserve (15 minutes' walk), meet the residents of Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary (three minutes’ drive) or go for rollercoasters and rides at Funland Amusement Park (five minutes). Back on the mainland, places like Chichester (20 minutes), Portsmouth (20 minutes) and Arundel Castle (35 minutes) are all good options for days out.
