  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub in Marske-by-the-Sea
  • Five minutes' drive from the beach; North York Moors 20 minutes
  • Large beer garden with a well-equipped playground; barbecues allowed
Pitching your tent in the grounds of a village pub with a large beer garden – for some, that might be the very definition of ‘living the dream’. Well, this particular dream is real at New Marske Sports Club, a family-friendly boozer just across the A174 from the North Yorkshire village of Marske-by-the-Sea. While the grownups have a cheeky drink in the beer garden (with plenty of shaded seating), the kids can blow off some steam in the playground, which has slides and climbing structures, plus a sandpit and a miniature golf course. The beaches of Marske-by-the-Sea and Redcar are a five- and 10-minute drive away respectively. The former, a dog-friendly sandy stretch backed by dunes, is popular for watersports (if you can brave the chilly North Sea) and fishing; the latter is also sandy, with occasional rockpools teeming with marine life. If you’re not up for sand between your toes, you might prefer to hike on the trails lacing Errington Wood (10 minutes’ walk), from where you can take in views of the coast; or try to improve your handicap at Saltburn-by-the-Sea Golf Club (five minutes’ drive). The pub serves traditional British food, but if you prefer to prepare your own meals, barbecues are allowed too. You can source basic provisions in the on-site food shop, or there’s a large supermarket in Redcar (10 minutes’ drive). In addition to the toilets in the pub, there is a toilet block and showers for the camping field, plus charging and recycling facilities.

Liked: Convenient location

Disliked: This site is best for those that want to drink, have loud music until late, and let their kids run around. Our pitch was right next to the porta loos, which was convenient, but also meant that we could smell them and hear everyone walking past at all hours of the night to use them. We even had someone nearly fall onto our tent walking to them. This made me extremely uneasy staying there. We tried the main toilet block as well but found none of them had any soap. We are new to camping and this was not the type of camping we had in mind.

From the manager: Thanks for your comments. Pitches were not allocated for your stay. You chosen to pitch next to the portaloo. There was no Loud Music at all onsite from 10.30pm onwards. As it's prohibited and the site owner done regular checks on the site till 3am. Toilets were fully stocked with toilet roll and cleaned on a regular basis.

Liked: Stayed here for 2 on arrival was greeted with a lady telling us where we can pitch up very friendly and helpful and once tent was up kids were off playing in the park and on the inflatables. Tara on the desk was so helpful and all the staff were fantastic and made you feel so welcome. Family fair on the 2nd night which was brilliant and not as busy as some places would recommend this to anyone especially for the price and not far from the beach. Everyone who reads this needs to know the negative reviews on here are a load of rubbish u go camping in a field with porta loos u don’t expect them to be like Buckingham palace. Noise was kept down on both nights by a top guy who didn’t even mind having a chat about stuff with u. Deffo stay here again and thanks for a cracking 2 days.

Disliked: Having to watch boro for 35 mins b4 watching Newcastle get beat haha

Local attractions

You’d better have your best hiking boots with you, for North York Moors National Park – with its heather-covered hills and stream-laced woodlands – is within easy reach (20 minutes’ drive). Woodpeckers, grouse and tawny owls call this vast expanse of moorland home, so this is a top spot for birdwatchers. There is also mountain biking to be done, plus stargazing. Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens (half an hour) includes the atmospheric ruins of a 14th-century Carthusian monastery (with a reconstructed monk’s cell) and a manor house with Arts and Crafts furnishings, such as an original William Morris carpet. And don’t forget to take a stroll through the grounds, with seasonal highlights like springtime bluebells and red autumn maples. The wetlands at RSPB Saltholme (35 minutes) are dotted with hides so you can observe lapwings, peregrine falcons and water rails as they go about their nesting and feeding business. While you’re there, you’ll also be able to take in views of the imposing Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge.
