Quarry hill campsite

  • Off-grid camping on hilly grassland near Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Filey and Cayton Bay; 20 minutes to Bridlington
  • Hillside or level pop-up camping pitches with showers and toilets
Looking for an off-grid adventure staying on a site with magnificent views of the Yorkshire coastline? Quarry Hill Campsite might be the right spot for you – it's set on nine acres of open grassland and hillside, and with many more acres on hand for you to explore. Yes, this family-run site is off grid but it does have a good clutch of facilities, including spotless separate showers and toilet in a hand-built wooden amenities shack (there are emergency sockets in there for charging devices, by the way), as well as a casual snack bar and alfresco bench seating (both weather dependent) by reception. Barbecues are allowed as long as the weather conditions are not too windy or dry. It's worth noting that the ground is not completely flat here, but the tradeoff for that hilly location is some excellent Yorkshire coastline views. From various points around the site, you can see Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, as well as the surfing beach at Cayton Bay. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to share your North Yorkshire camping break here, and they're also allowed on Cayton Bay beach all year round. If you’re walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way and don’t have a car, buses to Bridlington and Filey are a short walk away.

What customers say

Friendly, helpful owners and clean facilities are a hit! Expect great views, a family vibe with space for kids and a games tent. The cafe's a winner for tasty, affordable food, especially waffles and pizzas. Grounds can be tough and sloped, but hospitality shines through!

Bell tent (basic)

Liked From the second we arrived to the moment we left the service we received was second to none.

The campsite, whilst only a pop-up, has flushing toilets and belting showers.

We couldn’t have a bbq because of the recent exceptionally dry weather so decided to go for a few burgers and pizzas made by the owners. Very reasonably priced and particularly tasty.

Paul (the owner, who’s wife is lucky to have him) was a great host. I’d recommend not downing a load of beers and smashing in the amazing desserts before partaking on his optional evening hike.

Disliked Nothing. Even offered the host a beer and he politely declined.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The site was perfect for me and my lad. Lovely owners and welcoming.
Showers were brilliant warm and powerful.
Ability to buy food if needed and free games for kids.

Not an overly busy site which was a bonus. Felt safe leaving tent unsupervised and leaving site.

Primitive grass campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely site.
The owners were very welcoming, telling us all about the site and facilities, showing us to our pitch, and giving tips for the local area.
The pitches are at the top of a fairly steep site, but set on terraces, so we enjoyed panoramic views right across to the coast.
We visited on the opening weekend, so facilities were clean and worked perfectly. From conversations with the owners, I’ve no doubt they will stay this way throughout the season.
Showers were full size cubicles with hot water, good pressure, and plenty of space to dry off and change.
We ate on site, enjoying freshly made pizza and garlic bread at decent prices.
There was a small play area at the bottom of the site near the cafe, alongside a marquee to eat or socialise in. As well as providing somewhere for children and families, it also contributed to making the camping area peaceful.
The owners also have a large area of land above and behind the campsite which visitors are free to use, with deer, hares, and a variety of birds. We saw a quail and a few large birds of prey during our stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We came here as a group of 4 and had such a lovely stay here this weekend. We couldn’t recommend it enough!

As complete camping beginners, we really struggled to get our tent up in the wind. The owners could see we were having a nightmare and very kindly moved us into an available bell tent instead. It completely saved our weekend, and we were so grateful for their kindness and understanding.

The campsite is run by such a lovely family who genuinely couldn’t do enough to help us. Nothing was too much trouble, and they made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived.

We also had one of their stone-baked pizzas for tea and breakfast sandwiches the next morning, and both were absolutely delicious. The toilets and showers were spotless throughout our stay, and the whole site was clearly very well looked after.

We asked the owners for a taxi recommendation into Scarborough, and they pointed us in the right direction. It was only around a 15-minute journey and really reasonably priced, so it was the perfect location for enjoying a peaceful campsite while still being close to everything Scarborough has to offer.

We’ll definitely be back later this summer, and next time we’ll be booking one of the bell tents from the start! They were in fantastic condition and made our first camping experience so much more enjoyable.

Thank you for making what could have been a stressful weekend into such a memorable one!

Local attractions

Long-distance walkers, this is a clever overnight stop as the site has direct access to the Yorkshire Wolds Way, and there are bracing hikes along the headlands at Flamborough Head (half an hour’s drive). The North York Moors National Park (15 minutes) is also a hub for hiking and cycling, with many, many trails crossing the moorland. If you’re intent on exploring North Yorkshire’s beaches, you’re spoilt for choice. Dog-owners and surfers can make their way to canine-friendly and remote Cayton Bay (10 minutes’ drive), while Bridlington (20 minutes) has amusement arcades and is the departure point for high-speed boat trips along the coastline. Filey (10 minutes) is known for its quiet family-friendly beach as well as a bird garden, and Scarborough (20 minutes) has a sandy swathe backed by a castle and museums. Kids part of your holiday plans? Let them get up close to cuddle the alpacas and ponies at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), or challenge them to races on the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). And if they’re playing up, you could always lose them (temporarily of course) in the seasonal maze at Great Ryedale (15 minutes).
