  • Off-grid camping on hilly grassland near Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Filey and Cayton Bay; 20 minutes to Bridlington
  • Hillside or level pop-up camping pitches, a shower shack and snack bar
Looking for an off-grid adventure on a chalkland site with magnificent views of the Yorkshire coastline? Quarry Hill Campsite might be the right spot for you, set on nine acres of open grassland and hillside, and with many more acres on hand for you to explore. Yes, this family-run site is off grid but it does have spotless, separate showers and loos in a hand-built, wooden amenities shack (there are emergency sockets in there for charging devices by the way), as well as an casual snack bar (typically open Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 2pm subject to change and weather conditions) and alfresco bench seating (both weather dependent) right by reception. Please note that the ground is not completely flat here, but the Yorkshire coastline views more than make up for it. From various points around the site, you can see Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, as well as the surfing beach at Cayton Bay. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to share your North Yorkshire camping break, and they are also allowed on Cayton Bay beach all year round. If you’re walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way and don’t have a car, buses to Bridlington and Filey leave from outside the campsite. Barbecues are allowed as long as the weather conditions are not too windy or dry.

Liked: Fantastic campsite lovely hosts always available and helpful. On-site cafe was big hit the children loved the pancakes. Facilities really clean and great showers. Loved the relaxed atmosphere and being able to pitch wherever rather than set pitches. We will definitely be back next year.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Welcome was great. Contacted the mobile given and was greeted by owner. Was given a welcome pack and given a bit of advice as to the field and how/where to pitch.

Disliked: Angle of the field. We knew this and booked anyway. Didn’t bother us but may be a problem for some when sleeping.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The potential of this site is fantastic , the owners are enthusiastic and really help full. Snack shack - unreal - kids loved it. Pool table , table tennis and table football inside a large covered area.

Disliked: I wouldn't say disliked. Areas to improve - shower and toilet at the bottom tier too small , as more families came - the cues got longer.

Liked: We had an absolutely brilliant 3 night stay, amazing views, clean facilities, shooting star. The owners where soo nice and friendly, really welcoming and we all felt really safe and relaxed. Kids had a great time, running up and down hills and playing with other kids. Plenty of space. The wifi is better than when im at home. Would definitely recommend, and where looking forward to going back next year.

Local attractions

Long-distance walkers, this is a clever overnight stop as the site has direct access to the Yorkshire Wolds Way, and there are bracing hikes along the headlands at Flamborough Head (half an hour’s drive). The North York Moors National Park (15 minutes) is also a hub for hiking and cycling, with many, many trails crossing the moorland. If you’re intent on exploring North Yorkshire’s beaches, you’re spoilt for choice. Dog-owners and surfers can make their way to canine-friendly and remote Cayton Bay (10 minutes’ drive), while Bridlington (20 minutes) has amusement arcades and is the departure point for high-speed boat trips along the coastline. Filey (10 minutes) is known for its quiet family-friendly beach as well as a bird garden, and Scarborough (20 minutes) has a sandy swathe backed by a castle and museums. Kids part of your holiday plans? Let them get up close to cuddle the alpacas and ponies at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), or challenge them to races on the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). And if they’re playing up, you could always lose them (temporarily of course) in the seasonal maze at Great Ryedale (15 minutes).
