Quarry hill campsite

  • Off-grid camping on hilly grassland near Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Filey and Cayton Bay; 20 minutes to Bridlington
  • Hillside or level pop-up camping pitches with showers and toilets
Looking for an off-grid adventure staying on a site with magnificent views of the Yorkshire coastline? Quarry Hill Campsite might be the right spot for you – it's set on nine acres of open grassland and hillside, and with many more acres on hand for you to explore. Yes, this family-run site is off grid but it does have a good clutch of facilities, including spotless separate showers and toilet in a hand-built wooden amenities shack (there are emergency sockets in there for charging devices, by the way), as well as a casual snack bar and alfresco bench seating (both weather dependent) by reception. Barbecues are allowed as long as the weather conditions are not too windy or dry. It's worth noting that the ground is not completely flat here, but the tradeoff for that hilly location is some excellent Yorkshire coastline views. From various points around the site, you can see Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, as well as the surfing beach at Cayton Bay. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to share your North Yorkshire camping break here, and they're also allowed on Cayton Bay beach all year round. If you’re walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way and don’t have a car, buses to Bridlington and Filey are a short walk away.

Great views, super friendly owners & spotless facilities. Kids love the food and activities. Peaceful, though slopes can be tricky (bring strong pegs!). Managers working on levelling.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked We had the best weekend and Quarry Hill Campsite, we stayed in one of the bell tents. The facilities were kept really clean. The views are outstanding and the hosts are so friendly and helpful. There are food trucks on site and games to keep everyone occupied. The animals in a separate field were an added bonus. The bear hunt for the kids was great, you could hear everyone around the site talking about it. Can’t wait to come back!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked First time camping at Quarry Hill as a solo mum with 2 daughters. This site is honestly the safest I have ever felt!

There's so many positive things about this place to list but here's the very best bits:
- The owners have an ANPR type system to monitor vehicles coming in and are prompt to check/ greet vehicles as they arrive.
- Gates close at night so no entry or exit after a set time( can't remember what time this is)
-Pizza van selling sourdough pizzas 10/10
-Waffles, jackets, burgers, sandwiches sold from the snack van along with hot and cold drinks. 10/10
-Owners visible at all times if you have any issues or need advice/help.
-Family run site where Paul, Kate and all the kids muck in and mingle with guests.
-Cleanest toilet and shower I've ever seen at a campsite.
-Games areas for the kids including football nets, badminton. Poop tables, table tennis, connect 4 and a nightly 'bear hunt' where teddy bears are hidden by the owners and Paul takes all the kids to hunt for them by torchlight.
- Kids were able to help collect eggs and my eldest even went to one of the family members stables to see the horses.
- Feels like visiting friends after only 1 weekend.
- Beautiful sunset views from the top

We are already booked to go back in 2 weeks to try out one of the bell tents on offer. This place will definitely be our annual camping destination.

ANPR of all registered vehicles booked to camp so Paul can check who is arriving on site.
Gates close on a night so no vehicles can move in or put

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Plenty of space between tents. Nice clean facilities, friendly hosts who couldn’t do enough for you. They even ran little bear hunt walks and offered my kids the chance to go collect eggs from the chickens for the cafe. The pizzas were lovely and the whole atmosphere was very welcoming and friendly. Beautiful views of the countryside and you can see the sea in the distance.

Local attractions

Long-distance walkers, this is a clever overnight stop as the site has direct access to the Yorkshire Wolds Way, and there are bracing hikes along the headlands at Flamborough Head (half an hour’s drive). The North York Moors National Park (15 minutes) is also a hub for hiking and cycling, with many, many trails crossing the moorland. If you’re intent on exploring North Yorkshire’s beaches, you’re spoilt for choice. Dog-owners and surfers can make their way to canine-friendly and remote Cayton Bay (10 minutes’ drive), while Bridlington (20 minutes) has amusement arcades and is the departure point for high-speed boat trips along the coastline. Filey (10 minutes) is known for its quiet family-friendly beach as well as a bird garden, and Scarborough (20 minutes) has a sandy swathe backed by a castle and museums. Kids part of your holiday plans? Let them get up close to cuddle the alpacas and ponies at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), or challenge them to races on the inflatables at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes). And if they’re playing up, you could always lose them (temporarily of course) in the seasonal maze at Great Ryedale (15 minutes).
