  • On a small working farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A 10-minute walk to the famed Sutton Hoo National Trust site
  • About a 10-minute drive to Woodbridge and Rendlesham Forest
A melodic name isn’t all Sutton Hoo has going for it… this site on a small working farm among free-range chickens is also less than a 10-minute walk from Sutton Hoo. You'll have heard of that of course: the splendid Anglo-Saxon ship burial where a warrior king lay for 1,400 years, and hailed since its discovery in the 1930s as one of the finest archaeological finds anywhere in Britain. Trips down memory lane are all around the local area too, as the park's in the age-old Suffolk Coast and Heath Area of Natural Beauty, and a 10-minute drive from the Woodbridge Tide Mill on the River Deben, one of the last in the world still churning up flour using time-honoured techniques. Visit to learn about the process through interactive activities then ply the streets and traditional stores of the pretty riverside market town of Woodbridge – it’s got a butcher, fishmonger and greengrocer (as well as more modern amenities like a supermarket, coffee shops and clothes boutiques). Get your supplies from these local producers then tote it back to the park and cook it up on the campfire while the kids and dogs run around on the big grass field opposite. And if you're after more historical expeditions once fully fed? Orford (20 minutes’ drive) and Framlingham (25 minutes) both have castles to check out, while the coastal and woodland walks near the site are sure to have you harking back to simpler times. One tree-lined place for a wander close by is Rendlesham Forest a 10-minute drive away, which is well worth a visit for its play areas, picnic spots and bike park, as well as its orienteering trails and horse riding paths.

FHU grass and sand campsite

Liked Very quiet and peaceful. There was some road noise but not till commute time Monday morning and even then only the occasional traffic. Site clean and all amenities good. We, and another visitor, were not booked in but a call to Helen quickly resolved this. Lovely field for exercising dogs which was a definite plus

Disliked Bin was overflowing when we arrived, but guess bin men were due ...

FHU grass and sand campsite

Liked Really enjoyable stay here. Found our names on the whiteboard on arrival and pitched up without any problems. Nice separation between pitches with hedges and very handy to have the fully serviced pitches. Bathroom facilities were fine, nice hot showers. Well signposted to site, especially easy given the proximity to National Trust property.

Disliked Had some noise from the farm machinery in the next field but it was tolerable. Didn't really hear traffic on the road apart from the odd motorbike zooming up the hill.

FHU grass and sand campsite

Liked Size of pitches, hedges between pitches.
Level site and easy location to find. Excellent position for exploring Suffolk coast, Woodbridge, Rendlesham Forest, Sutton Hoo and Orford Ness.
Clean toilet block.

Disliked Not enough recycling capacity, so bins overflowing.

Wash up sink could do with a descale. A small food waste bin would have been useful, as people left food detritus in plug holes.

Local attractions

Once you’ve had your wander in the woods, the water awaits: the River Deben is just the spot for fishing and sailing less than 10 minutes’ drive away. You can also hire rowing, sailing and canoeing boats and explore the islands and waterways of Thorpeness (30 minutes) and its mere or switch to the artsy coastal town of Aldeburgh (25 minutes’ drive) for strolls on the North Sea sands, catching flicks at the century-old cinema and jaunts up the old Martello Tower. Another scenic seaside village is Southwold further on at 45 minutes from the park with its Victorian pier and classic white lighthouse. And if you're into twitching? The coastal birding spots of Minsmere and Dunwich are both 40 minutes’ drive.
