  • Small-scale pop-up Suffolk site at a farm in Wenhaston
  • Southwold, Dunwich and Walberswick beaches within a 15-minute drive
  • Barbecues, campfires and dogs welcome; village pub 10 minutes' walk
Popping up just for Suffolk stays in the height of summer, The Roost is a laidback and small-scale site within the meadows of a farm on the edge of Wenhaston. With big open skies, chickens wandering nearby, hedgerows full of wildlife and plenty of space to chill out, this is a fabulous spot for a relaxed rural break – and with the added bonus of being able to walk to the village’s award-winning pub in about 10 minutes. Tucked away in the scenic Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape, you’ll be able to get straight out onto quiet footpaths and lanes for a walk or bike ride easily enough, including routes that are suitable for any accompanying kids and dogs you’ve brought along. Alternatively, pile into the car for a trip to the coast (perhaps the beach in Southwold or the birdwatching hides at RSPB Minsmere) or a day out at a castle, a farm park or a theme park – they’re all within about 40 minutes’ drive. However you choose to spend your days, you should at some point stock up on supplies for a barbecue or campfire back on site – either make a lovely prelude to an evening of stargazing under the dark skies. You’ll also be able to freshen up at The Roost's wash shed, which has flushing loos and a hot shower. A washing-up station and a barn kitchen with a communal fridge, kettle and power point for charging phones are also on site. Parking is in the smallholding by the wash shed; there's a short hill up to the field and its views, but wheelbarrows are provided to help you shift your equipment.

What customers say

This well-organized, clean, and peaceful campground offers beautiful views and friendly, helpful owners. Facilities include washrooms, showers, and a dishwashing station. Some guests mentioned the hilly terrain and limited field parking, though wheelbarrows were provided. The location is ideal for exploring nearby beaches and attractions, with a pub also within walking distance. Issues, like with the shower, were promptly resolved.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked So much to like here:

The lovely greenery, the horses that chomp lazily in the field next door, the hens that have been rescued by the hosts that I said "hello gals" to as I walked past each and every time.

Had a fantastic night stay at The Roost and had a wonderful reception from the hosts - so thank you for your warm welcome and departure.

Love the honesty fridge (had myself a couple of the Southwold ales - nice and cold!) and just found the whole atmosphere so calm and slow; just how I like it.

Disliked If I'm being picky, probably the walk from where you park your car to the field where you can choose your pitch.

I was lucky as I arrived very early (earliest check in), and got myself prime location quite close to the grassy ramp that leads back to the facilities and parking area. But - please consider that you will have to cart your gear (in a provided wheelbarrow mind) to and from your vehicle. And that's being really picky, as I do love a Park 'N' Pitch generally.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Nice place, friendly owner. For reference, it is a hilly field. This might affect some visitors. There is a nearby pub, the Star Room, Worth a visit, but if there's a band on, they don't have food. We choose this site because it's near to the Thorrington Theatre.

Bell tent

Liked Lovely views, peaceful, comfortable bed in tent. Close to popular beaches. Great hosts with all the facilities that you need. Very clean.

Disliked The walk up the slight hill can be a little bit challenging if you have disabilities like myself, it is only a short walk, however.

Bell tent

Liked Really enjoyed the tent, spacious and comfortable. The location is lovely, a working farm with character, but a gorgeous big campsite and nice to see chickens and horses near by.

The facilities were good, we had an issue with the shower and with a quick message to the owner it was sorted in 5 minutes.

Really good communication pre arrival from the owners, and they were friendly and helpful on arrival.

Bell tent

Liked We stayed in the bell tent for one night, it was great, clean, spacious, comfy beds, quiet, great toilet/wash facilities. The owner was really friendly and helped us with the area. We couldn’t find the light in the toilet block that was our only minor issue (but could have been us being silly!) Thanks for a great stay!
