General

  • Well-maintained site with excellent facilities
  • A few miles from the Norfolk coast
  • Sixteen luxury bathrooms on site with individual showers and loos

Have you ever been to the Norfolk coast? Pine-ing to return or to see it for the first time? Come and stay at Pine Cones Caravan and Camping, near King's Lynn inland and Heacham and Hunstanton on the coastline – this is such a royally good region that Queen Liz and her cohorts have a pad at Sandringham just a mile away.

If the Queen were camping, it's a fairly safe bet Liz would like the up to date and excellently kept amenities at Pine Cones too: 16 warm luxury bathrooms, all with their own shower, toilets, basin and storage racks; a roomy, indoors washing-up area with several sinks and plenty of drainer space; and a washing machine and dryer in a separate room to sort out the laundry.

Once the essentials are sorted, send the kids off to the adventure playground to try out the treehouse, rope ladders and high level walkway, and settle down in the picnic area with coffee and eats… there's a coffee machine on site and the well-stocked shop sells a good selection of items including bread, milk, and fresh and frozen food. A selection of outdoor gym equipment is also available for the energetic holidaymaker.

Off site, Pine Cones is about a mile from the nearest pub the Feathers, or trot off to award-winning the Coach and Horses. Both are in nearby Dersingham village, where there's also a supermarket, takeaway and coffee shop dishing up homemade cakes daily.

Lovely shower block with separate, individual enclosures. Nicely tiled floor and walls. Very clean and cosy with radios in each one.

    Disliked:

Having to come home early because of lock down half way through the break. Not Pine Cones fault though. No other dislikes, all good.

Our first stay at Pine Cones. Pitches are clearly marked and a really good size. We had a fully serviced pitch on gravel however even in winter with a motorhiome I wouldn't be worried about having a grass pitch as the land is so well drained even after really heavy rain we had. The walks from the site were beautiful, easy access to large village with supermarket etc and access to Sandringham Estate. Walked to Snettisham beach which is a hours pleasant walk through the countryside. Didn't use the facilities apart from the elsan disposal due to Covid although they were open. The disposal point was spotless with hand sanitiser and disinfectant available.
Setting is nice, directly onto main road so very easy access. Previous reviews have commented on road noise which there was a element of but if you book a site which is clearly near a road then you should expect this. There are quite a few seasonal pitches with caravans that were unattended. At this site however they were all pretty well maintained and you didn't get a negative impression like you do on some sites. Would comment that wifi is provided and whilst this worked a little on the first day, after this was very intermittent and as such unuseable even though there were not many units occupied on the site.

    Disliked:

The warden was clear explain that noise should be kept at a minimum at night. A seasonal pitch was directy behind our pitch and was clearly used by a seasonal worker. On 2 of the 3 mornings we stayed this person went to work at 3.25am and banged his car door, drove off and woke us up. There is ample safe parking near the main entrance a short walk away so I feel that this was very thoughtless and should have been picked up by the management team. This was the only thing that spoiled our stay, and we would definately book again.

    Friendly and efficient reception staff.
Nice size pitches, level, with electric hook up, water, and greywater drain.
Good toilet and shower facilities, indoor washing up area.
Good location for coast and Sandringham.
    Very good value for money.

    Disliked:

Grass pitch was bald - just mostly bare earth, though not surprising as it was late season, and had had heavy occupancy. However, drainage was good - didn’t get muddy, despite quite a bit of rain.
Fair amount of traffic noise from adjacent A149, from early in the morning.
WiFi didn’t work for me - maybe because I was furthest from reception. This wasn’t a problem for me, but it might be for some.

Nicest toilet block of any site stayed on.
Good walks straight from the site.
Dog friendly pub ( the feathers ) about a 20 min walk from the site, it does involve crossing a really busy road to get there and the footpath is muddy so not ideal after dark.

    Disliked:

So close to the main road you can see lorry’s through the trees so there is quite a bit of traffic noise at all hours.
Small run off stream behind the pitches we stayed on which stank so we didn’t sit outside.

Local attractions

Beaches, historic houses, museums and festivals, tiny villages, market towns and fab family days out are all easily accessible from Pine Cones Caravan and Camping – after a day at Sandringham, but of course, to wave at Liz first...

Within a couple of miles, the deer safaris, farming activities and walking trails of Snettisham Deer Park and the sights and smells of Norfolk Lavender are both good options for a day out; Snettisham has an RSPB reserve too for those itching to twitch.

But as you're probably in west/north Norfolk for the beaches, head to Heacham, Holkham and Hunstanton first, the closest sands to Pine Cones, and then take a trip to Brancaster 11 miles away; the family-friendly and very scenic sands of Sheringham, Cromer and Mundsley are a little further along the coast. (Also, the final scenes of Shakespeare in Love were filmed at Holkham, and all the beaches in these parts are fairly filmworthy, so bring your camera.)

Other excellent options for days out include village hopping and shopping among the scenic sights of Dersingham, Holt, Fakenham, Aylsham and Burnham Market to pick up some local produce, or going along to one of Norfolk's festivals or events: there's usually something going on throughout the year.

Pine Cones is also on the edge the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – bring walking boots, crabbing nets and plenty of room for picnics.
