  • Basic family-friendly campsite in the Derbyshire Dales
  • Crich Tramway and Matlock Bath within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly site with links to Midshires Way and Cromford Canal walks
Peaceful strolls, Peak District adventures and fab rural scenery are some of what makes Hankin Farm Campsite a peachy holiday base. And peachy it is indeed… this basic, family-friendly site in the Derbyshire Dales has splendid views over Crich Stand and the added bonus of being 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park for those of you who are up for lots of outdoor exploration. This farm is between the villages of Alderwasley and Whatstandwell and 10 minutes' drive from Belper's numerous shops and other amenities, so coffee shops, pubs, takeaways and supermarkets are all well within reach. The nearest railway station is a mile away in Whatstandwell, making it possible to get to Hankin Farm Campsite without a car. Peaceful walks are part of the local area’s charm, including connections to the Midshires Way, the Cromford Canal and Shining Cliff Woods. That isn’t all though, as all sorts of kid-pleasing activities are very close at hand too, including Crich's well-known tramway museum, Matlock Bath's various amusements and theme parks like Gulliver's Kingdom. The roomy and dog-friendly pitches have access to separate male and female showers and toilets, plus a washing-up area. And as long as you use common sense and follow instructions from the site’s staff, barbecues and campfires are permitted on the pitches.

What customers say

This family-run farm campsite offers a peaceful rural retreat with beautiful views. Visitors praise the friendly, helpful owners, spacious sites, and clean, basic facilities with hot showers. It's ideally located for local walks and attractions. While some note the sloped terrain and rustic amenities, most found it excellent value and would gladly return.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The owners were lovely and the views beautiful but the photos are deceiving it's not as big as we thought

Disliked Other guests, there was room over the far side of the field but a family of 10 decided to cram in next to me and my husband in our little tent, the music was full blast and the mother was loud and obnoxious.

We left and didn't even finish the stay

From the manager: We're sorry to hear that you didn't have a pleasant stay on our campsite.
We tell all guests on arrival that music and noise must be kept within their pitch, and music must be turned off at 10pm.
I spoke to all our guests this morning on site and no one mentioned any issues of noise.
If you had notified us by coming down to the farm house, or by calling us we would have taken action to ask them to keep the noise down or risk being told to leave the site.
Our photos are not deceiving, it is a large 5 acre field which is correctly reflected in the photos provided by us and our guests of our facilities.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Loved the simplicity of the pitch, which also reflects in the price. Perfect for what I needed for the night. Great views, ponies and cattle on either side.
Hot water dishwashing area which was undercover - brill.

Disliked I think the toilet and shower blocks could do with a lick of paint inside to feel more welcoming, the breeze blocks are a bit garden shed feeling but for £10 per night I understand the lack of sprucing.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Friendly owners who care about your experience. Separate M/F toilets and showers which are always super clean with hot water. Also enough for guests so never had to wait to use them.
Location - lots of great dog walks from the site, close to the Cromford Canal walking route, and a fabulous pub for daytime coffee & food.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Plot out the way to the Peak District… will it be fish and chips by the river in Matlock Bath (10 minutes' drive) or taking the cable car to the Heights of Abraham’s underground caverns (10 minutes) that gets your attention first? Gulliver's Kingdom (10 minutes) is just outside the town too for those of you with kids tagging along. Places that bring a little of history to your holiday are easy to find around here. There are period buildings and vintage trams ready for boarding at Crich Tramway (10 minutes), tours and walks around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cromford Mills (10 minutes) and the Nine Ladies (25 minutes) stone circle to see. Belper (10 minutes) is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site – so you'll be well-set to learn more about the Peak District's industrial heritage – and for other interesting little places, Wirksworth (10 minutes) has a lively marketplace, heritage centre and a museum with the bones of old villagers. For those of you with an artistic streak, Denby Pottery Village (15 minutes) runs pottery painting in its craft studio, or you could look inside the farm shop and factory shop to see what goodies are available to take home.
