  • Family-run site on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park
  • Just over 10 minutes’ drive to Newton Abbot and 30 to Torquay beaches
  • Bovey Tracey within 15 minutes and Paignton half an hour away
For a hol full of zest in south Devon squeeze in some time at family-run Lemonford Caravan Park, a well-located spot for exploring the many attractions in this area. It’s between country and coast right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and half an hour’s drive from the beaches around the English Riviera resorts of Torquay and Paignton. After settling in, trekkers might want to tackle the craggy terrain of Dartmoor first, scrambling over the hills and paddling in the streams and rivers of this sprawling granite-studded setting. The walk up to Hay Tor (starting from just over 10 minutes’ drive away) is stellar if you’re seeking a structured stroll: it’ll have you taking in the classic moorland scenery while you work up a sweat. Widecombe in the Moor (a 15-minute drive) is also worth stopping by for a typical Devonshire town with a cracker of a church (so splendid it's known as the Cathedral of the Moor). More of a beachcomber? You can make a beeline towards Teignmouth and Dawlish for castle-building on the sand or choose Paignton Pier for coastal sessions in between tenpin bowling, fairground rides and crazy golf (all around 30 minutes’ drive away). Leaflets for farm parks, model villages, caves and other stuff to do are all on display at the site’s information area if you’ll be looking for more attractions and activities. Also at Lemonford Caravan Park are amenities including toilets, showers, washing-up areas, a shared freezer and a laundry room; a spacious separate wetroom and toilet are also available for guests with limited mobility. For other essentials like supermarkets and town shops, Newton Abbot (just over 10 minutes away) is your hub and it has a leisure centre should kids be wanting to swap sessions on the park playground for splashing in a swimming pool.

Liked: It’s very close to penny well farm, just a 10 minute drive. Close to supermarkets. Plenty of water taps and electric stations all around. The picnic tablets were a plus. Plenty of space, nobody is crowed, the camping field was very good. Friendly residents in the park who were happy to help.

Disliked: Plenty of toilets but sadly only one shower and being a family of 5 girls showering did turn into a bit of a long event. Shower could also do with a little bit of upgrading.

Powered grass tent site

Liked: This was our 2nd time camping and it was so easy to get there, easy to get onto our pitch that we got told if the grass was too muddy still after the down poor we was aloud to go anywhere that was safe enough to sleep that night, my children were safe in the park and we didn't have to worry about them at all. Easy access to toilets, washing up areas and had baby changing area, we had some trouble with someone on a quad bike but we called up the manager and within 10 minutes he was off it and not allowed on again as there's a policy for no motorbikes quad bikes or anything that can halm the people staying there. All had 5 mile an hour signs too. Walking access to the fields near by so you don't have to stay on the pitch.

Disliked: No dislikes at all

Liked: location is handy for a trip to the Moors

Disliked: No check-in given just a number to call and told to park wherever with no guidance on navigating the site or where the facilities where or wifi code etc. No number was given for out-of-hours things like complaining about the party happening right across from us that went on till 5 am. No one seemed to be taking any notice and we were kept up all night by what looked to be long term 'guests'! The toilets were old but clean enough however the toilet waste point was blocked and the site was looking very unlooked after.

Liked: Not much

Disliked: Whilst we notified of time of arrival when booking. Nobody at reception when we arrived. Waited a while and then rang and was told someone would be with us shortly. We were then told we would have to wait as cars needed to be moved from our pitch. Waited another 45 minutes to be taken to the pitch which still had a parked car on it and had to wait again, as the man had to sort his dogs out!. Advised that due to the weather the pitch was a 'bit moggy' on the edge. But totally wet and muddy. Couldn't put an awning up. Supposed to be a hard stand but looked more like an old gravel pitch that lacked much gravel and needed re-doing. Shower room had no lock on it, had to use disabled shower.

Liked: Very friendly, a bit compact but that was only because people staying in tents couldn’t park their cars next to them because the ground was too wet, but any other time it would be fine, very quiet

Liked: The staff on site were doing an excellent job at trying to cope with all the extra arrivals & could not be faulted especially Kelly.

Disliked: The picture of the hardstanding pitch on pitch up & unlimited space does not exist we was put on a end of row stone covered pitch in a boggy field. On the first night my car got stuck in the mud & a fellow camper had to pull me out also the electric went of at about 10pm just on the field we was in due to the amount of campers using it, we were told an emergency electrician had been called but when we woke at 8am it was still off, a fellow camper was an electrician & had to sort the issue out, the electric went off a few times during our stay, the the sanitary area for emptying dirty water was blocked and overflowing.

Liked: We had to book this as a last minute booking as our site cancelled on us

Disliked: Upon arrival the staff said that somebody was parked on our pitch and she couldn’t move them. We waited and still no luck. We ended up sharing somebody else’s pitch and was offered no compensation for this. The site was packed, you couldn’t get to the children’s play area as people had camped right infront of it. It constantly stank of weed throughout the night and again in the morning. The toilets were just simply disgusting. They had no sanitary bins in, mould everywhere, no toilet rolls and the hand dryer blew out cold air. We quickly packed up and left as soon as we could.

Liked: Regularly cleaned staff were friendly had everything you needed. Shop was bear but ok

Disliked: Check in was very lacking. Wasn’t given any info or the code for the gate which was closed early and no answer on the emergency line straight to voicemail. Had issues with the power one night. No communication from staff. Would have been nice to have had a message back when notifying them of the issue. Power went out at 10pm not returned till 11am following day. Made for a very cold night. Not good for disabled campers. Staff were made aware of disabilities. Definitely could f been handled better

Local attractions

It’s 10 minutes’ drive from here to Buckfast Abbey, an active Benedictine monastery dating back to 1018; get cultural here then balance it out with an offbeat activity like a trip to the House of Marbles in the small town of Bovey Tracey (under 15 minutes away) for the mesmerising glass displays, games museum and pottery pieces. For urban times in a bigger settlement, Exeter’s 30 minutes away – skedaddle here to tour the cathedral and the city centre’s underground passages; high-street shopping is also excellent in Devon’s capital on the River Exe. Also on the water, Plymouth is 35 minutes south if you fancy checking out the famed spot where the Pilgrim fathers first left for the US on the Mayflower in 1620...
