General
- Scenic site surrounded by woodlands in the Kent Downs
- A 10-minute drive from Maidstone and Leeds Castle
- Family-friendly site with visiting food trucks and high-spec bathrooms
Oftentimes, when the kids are running you ragged, a holiday sounds very much Oak-ay. So it's splendid that all sorts of stuff is soothing about Oak View Holiday Park, high on Kent's chalkland North Downs, run by very hospitable Jan and Harry and managed by the Kent County Agricultural Society.
Oak View is in the village of Detling, right next to the events and shows of the Kent County Showground, in a woodland setting in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's a 10-minute drive to Maidstone; about 13 miles to the sea, and a quick drive to some of Kent's most oaky-dokey attractions like Leeds and Rochester castles.
The modern bathroom block has a baby changing area and free hot water in its male, female and disabled shower rooms; the site also has a launderette, a washing-up area, waste disposal points and gas exchange service.

Local attractions
Oak View Holiday Park is in prime position to traverse the best of Kent's countryside, coast, castles and well-known gardens – with Essex and its coast easily accessible too to the north.
If you're here for an eventful time, check out what's on at the Kent County Showground (five minutes' drive away) – it's well known for the annual Kent County Show but runs other gatherings throughout the year too.
Plenty of pedalling and perambulating opps are around the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as the 153-mile route of the North Downs National Trail through from Farnham to Canterbury, passing the White Cliffs of Dover. This takes in the 119-mile Pilgrims' Way, the supposed route of Thomas Becket from Winchester to Canterbury Cathedral.
Elsewhere in Kent, loads is on all year round in the 500 acres of parkland and formal gardens at lovely Leeds Castle, like free falconry displays, play areas, special events and making one's way intrepidly out of the castle maze.
Also see Rochester Castle, on the east bank of the Medway, for its twelfth-century keep and stacks of historical info: the castle was sacked during the Peasants' Revolt, held for Henry III against the barons, and besieged (also because of barons) by bad King John.
Must see
- Leeds Castle (6.9 kilometres)
- The Historic Dockyard Chatham (10.8 kilometres)
