  • Cosy family-run and dog-friendly site in the Cotswolds
  • A 15-minute drive from Blenheim Palace; 25 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; access to footpaths and bridleways
After a cosy spot somewhere in the Cotswolds? Historic houses, museums and market towns are out in full force around the cosy Cotswolds Camping in its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles from Chipping Norton… to be exact, this family-run site is 15 minutes' drive away from Blenheim Palace and within striking distance of many characteristic Cotswolds trails. At the same time, Oxfordshire is the other way and Oxford itself is just 15 minutes’ train journey away from Charlbury Station (five minutes’ drive). As for those of you with a soft spot for a hardcore shopping trip, you won’t be left in the lurch here, as Bicester Village has a shopping outlet 35 minutes’ drive away and Stratford-upon-Avon is 45 minutes’ drive away for handsome riverside scenes and independent shops. Now, how about those hiking shoes? Well, the site has access to fancy footpaths, bridleways and woodland walks, so you’ll be able to get right to the rambling. You might want to stop by the local village, Charlbury, on your way around the local area, as there are food shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants here, all within walking distance of the site. And don’t worry, you’ll be able to carry the good time onto the site, as barbecues and firepits are both permitted – the same for dogs. As for the facilities you’ll have on hand, these include a play area, shower, toilets and a dishwashing area to help you deal with any dirty pots and pans.

What customers say

Great spot with helpful staff, clean facilities, and lovely location. Spacious sites, on-site cafe/bar, and family vibes are a hit. Minor quibbles about loos, hot water, and noise, but overall, a cracker of a place people wanna go back to.

Liked Everything about this place was great. The campsite itself was unbelievable. Very clean and tidy.

The staff that run the campsite were very helpful and very friendly and made us feel safe and welcome.

The Caldron Cafe is excellent clean and the food is great and so are the people that run it.

I’m a Wheelchair user and stayed here for three nights/4 days with my two young children and I can honestly say I’ve never felt more welcomed comfortable and safe.

This campsite is the best I’ve ever stayed on and will be returning very soon

If you want a easy stay in a Cotswolds then look no further than this place

Liked Very easy to check in and pitch tent. Very peaceful. The owner is lovely and told us all about the gypsy caravans and their origin. Very interesting.

Disliked The facilities were not cleaned regularly and there is no toilet paper.

Camping pod (three person)

Liked Entrance easy to see, access roads easy to drive. Site warden easily contacted via text or call. Easy check in process. Private toilet in pod. Mattress and sofa bed (though small) was comfortable.
Decent sized pod.
Site some has facilities, shared fridge and freezer available. Shop and reception on site although was closed most of the time when went past so not sure what was in the shop. Place to get hot food on site. Water tap throughout the site.
“Shower” area for dog opposite the main shower block. Car can be parked next to the pod. Ample lighting at the sinks and showers/toilet at night

Disliked Honestly was a little bit disappointed by our stay for a number of reasons.
Firstly the toilet in the pod could be easily converted to shower with toilet. Listing for the camp should state more clearly, listing said 1x bathroom, there was no bath or shower, should just be listed as 1x toilet only to avoid confusion.
No form of insulation in the pod, reflects and amplifies the weather, very hot during the day and very cold at night. No shade over the pods or outdoor space that came with the pod.
The pod was lightly cleaned before our arrival, dust still covering a lot of areas in the pod. Belongings from previous guests still, empty bags, sunglasses etc.
shower block next to the pod were closed during our 5 day stay so we had to use the main shower block at the front - 3 fields away. Showers have one temperature setting, water was too hot for me and my partner felt the same. Shared showers and toilet were clean.
Could do with a bin in the pod (which we could empty ourselves) or more bins throughout the site. Could do with some hooks throughout the pod, somewhere to hang towels or jackets.
Some people didn’t pick after their dogs, which was annoying (not the camp site fault of course)
Also pod was infested with ants so beware if you don’t like creepy crawlies, we were find with it but couldn’t keep food in the pod so everything stayed in containers or the fridge.

From the manager: Thankyou for you review, it is actually appreciated as you've included the positives and negatives and left us a balanced review with areas we can improve on, i will check over the listing on pitchup, i wasn't aware it could be listed as a toilet only, if it can be i will change that. I don't think we will ever add showers to them, although there is space. i like the idea of providing a sheltered or shaded area though, we haven't thought of that and its something that could be easily implemented, we have recently added the new showers at the front of the campsite, and during the year progressively turned the water temperature down, i think its almost at a level where it suits people who like hot showers and those that don't. Opposite the main shower and toilet block there are more showers which are temperate controlled. Next year we are going to include a map alongside the site rules which highlights all of the differing facilities. The pods are always cleaned , I'm hoping the items mentioned were on the outside on the decking and not inside. On very rare occasions customers are able to figure out the combination code to the key box and will sneak in, this has only happened 3 times in three years but it can be very upsetting for us and the customer using the accommodation. They all used to have bins inside but quite often were not emptied by customers and there would be piles of rubbish left alongside them, so we had to take them out. I currently have more hooks in reception ready to go into the pods. With us being in the countryside were always going to get creepy crawlies , each year we try our best top ant proof all the accommodations, and regularly apply ant powder to the outside of the buildings. I guess i final check before accommodations are hired out is what's needed to prevent the situation again.

Despite your review only being a four star review , you've taken the time to list the positives and negatives. As a family run business that's all we could ever ask for. If you can contact us on our email address or text us on the wardens number just to clarify if the rubbish was inside or outside, we will also issue you with a credit note for a free stay in a glamping pod for the future, obviously insuring there are no ants this time.

Liked Location was good for exploring the Cotswolds by car

Site has lots of potential with some investment and thoughtful adjustments for guests

Disliked -Campsite was a bit tired and the amenities were often out of order (blocked toilets)
-Site warden wasn’t very helpful, reached out to gain access to the shop which was listed as open but he said he was too tired to open it. I wasn’t aware guests needed to bring their own toilet roll and had already set up my camper for the evening when I realised, I was travelling solo with kids so was a bit of a pain.
-Bin area was over flowing and smelly close to the cafe area.
-when checking in we weren’t given any information about the site and were kind of left to it.
-The pitches in our field were a bit on top of each other and lacked space even though it wasn’t full. There was a confrontation between two separate guests on the site which was very uncomfortable, with more space this not have happened.

Stable Barn shepherd's hut (four person)

Liked Good location, not cramped, good clean toilet/shower facilities. Family and dog friendly. Nice little shop for basics. Kitchen facilities were better than anticipated (microwave, fridges, freezers). Will use again when we're next that way.

Disliked Meadow barn was clean but tired. Could've done with ventilation (windows that opened) and porch roof fixing. Not all toilets and showers working (due to a blockage from a busy weekend) so bit of a trek to the loo!

Gypsy caravan (two person, no pets)

Liked Site was clean and had good facilities

Disliked A tour bus right in front of where we were staying that decided it is acceptable to make as much noise as they liked when they returned at 2 AM I requested a certain wagon months in advance which was ignored after they said it would be fine to take my pick as long as i arrived at 14:00 hours which we did only to be told there is only one left as other people arrived extremely early before the agreed check in time

Local attractions

Trail time? You might want to begin with the Roman Fosse Way, passing by the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold (25 minutes' drive) and Moreton-in-Marsh (25 minutes). Or from Lechlade-on-Thames (half an hour), perhaps you'll roll right on to the Thames Path, if you’re not drawn into the water with watersports such as canoeing. Characterful towns and villages are a Cotswolds staple and it shows… Burford (15 minutes) is boxed full of unusual shops, pubs and tea rooms, while in Witney (20 minutes), you’ve got classic entertainment courtesy of a multi-screen cinema, shops and leisure centre mixed in with markets and the historic Cogges Manor Farm. In Woodstock (15 minutes) there’s more history inside The Oxfordshire Museum. Like Chipping Norton (10 minutes), the place has a swimming pool, shops, pubs and tea rooms galore, to add to Chipping Norton’s theatre and cinema. Historic are many of the houses around here, and that includes the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blenheim Palace (15 minutes), the Jacobean Chastleton House (20 minutes) and or the 18th-century Buscot Park (35 minutes). For more activities in the throw of it all, there’s Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (25 minutes) and Bourton-on-the-Water’s equestrian centre, brewery and motoring museum (half an hour).
