  • Cosy family-run and dog-friendly site in the Cotswolds
  • A 15-minute drive from Blenheim Palace; 25 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; access to footpaths and bridleways
After a cosy spot somewhere in the Cotswolds? Historic houses, museums and market towns are out in full force around the cosy Cotswolds Camping in its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles from Chipping Norton… to be exact, this family-run site is 15 minutes' drive away from Blenheim Palace and within striking distance of many characteristic Cotswolds trails. At the same time, Oxfordshire is the other way and Oxford itself is just 15 minutes’ train journey away from Charlbury Station (five minutes’ drive). As for those of you with a soft spot for a hardcore shopping trip, you won’t be left in the lurch here, as Bicester Village has a shopping outlet 35 minutes’ drive away and Stratford-upon-Avon is 45 minutes’ drive away for handsome riverside scenes and independent shops. Now, how about those hiking shoes? Well, the site has access to fancy footpaths, bridleways and woodland walks, so you’ll be able to get right to the rambling. You might want to stop by the local village, Charlbury, on your way around the local area, as there are food shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants here, all within walking distance of the site. And don’t worry, you’ll be able to carry the good time onto the site, as barbecues and firepits are both permitted – the same for dogs. As for the facilities you’ll have on hand, these include a play area, shower, toilets and a dishwashing area to help you deal with any dirty pots and pans.

What customers say

Ripper spot! Big campsites, legend staff & the Cauldron Cafe's a ripper. Family-friendly, cruisy vibe, great for checking out the Cotswolds. Mostly clean, but a few reckon facilities need a spruce-up, especially when it's busy. Manager's on it, upgrading loos and showers.

Liked Lovely site in beautiful area of the country. Good facilities, cafe etc. Large pitches, plenty of space around van.

Disliked Toilets were very rundown, dirty and dreadful smell however I do note that they will be upgraded for next season so would not be put off from returning.

Gypsy caravan (two person, no pets)

Liked Nothing

Disliked Just dumped in the car park with two other gypsy caravans. It was just for me but you would struggle to be comfortable with two people.

Powered grass tent site (maximum 6-berth)

Liked Family friendly, fire pits, Cauldron cafe, children’s play area, washing machines and tumble dryer, friendly staff. Not commercial. Good position to visit local places in the Cotswolds.

Disliked Not enough cleaning of facilities- was excellent when done but appeared to be done once a day by only one person. We were there during half term with the heat wave. More regular cleaning is required when the site is busy. The one person who was doing the cleaning was working his butt off, and should be commended for his hard work but he needs help!

Over flowing rubbish to the point you had to put your rubbish next to the large bins- during busy times increased refuse collection is required.

Not much hot water… showers mostly cold…

No hot water in outside washing up facilities.

The kitchen which has microwaves, toaster and fridges is good. However, it has the only sink for the whole site with hot water for washing up. A big problem is the floor is constantly wet which poses a slip hazard from a health and safety point of view. The kitchen needs a revamp/TLC!

Unpowered grass tent site (maximum 6-berth)

Liked Good sized pitches, numbered and separated. The campsite wasn’t full and I noticed that campers were separated and spaced out well across the site. The facilities on the campsite were good, nice little cafe/bar on site.

Disliked Only minor niggles here that didn’t massively impact our stay. The showers didn’t have temperature controls, so when I wanted a cold shower in the heat I couldn’t. The toilets were ok, but did get a bit dirty with some campers having a bad aim

Liked Very friendly, good location and plenty of space around pitch.

Disliked Lack of facilities for the size of the site (closest block of showers were locked off). Toilets were not the cleanest. Water location was in the middle of someone’s pitch.

From the manager: Hi Matt , thanks for your review. Unfortunately the first rule of the campsite being "All children must be supervised by a responsible adult" isn't being followed. the weekend before you came we had a group of children that decided to fill up two toilets with stones and vandalise the shower block by pulling off the piping from the walls. We had a plumber come on friday and do a temporary fix and he will be returning monday to get everything up and running again. Despite this the government guidelines stipulate a minimum of 1 shower per 30 pitches and two toilets. The campsite has 100 pitches with 17 showers and 18 toilets, even with the 6 that were temporarily closed were confident we provide more than enough to service all the pitches we have. Unfortunately we run every single day from march to october , although its rare sometimes maintenance needs to be performed when we are open. going off the reviews weve had this year we will be completely demolishing the top toilets and shower blocks and adding some new ones for next year. Improving the customer experience is very important to us.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, this year we undertook so many renovations, the playpark being one. We did have an influx of bad reviews this week but we appreciate all forms of reviews as it truly shows us where we can improve. We will be updating our top field showers and toilets this winter. SO THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER...I just need to improve my weeding next haha

Local attractions

Trail time? You might want to begin with the Roman Fosse Way, passing by the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold (25 minutes' drive) and Moreton-in-Marsh (25 minutes). Or from Lechlade-on-Thames (half an hour), perhaps you'll roll right on to the Thames Path, if you’re not drawn into the water with watersports such as canoeing. Characterful towns and villages are a Cotswolds staple and it shows… Burford (15 minutes) is boxed full of unusual shops, pubs and tea rooms, while in Witney (20 minutes), you’ve got classic entertainment courtesy of a multi-screen cinema, shops and leisure centre mixed in with markets and the historic Cogges Manor Farm. In Woodstock (15 minutes) there’s more history inside The Oxfordshire Museum. Like Chipping Norton (10 minutes), the place has a swimming pool, shops, pubs and tea rooms galore, to add to Chipping Norton’s theatre and cinema. Historic are many of the houses around here, and that includes the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blenheim Palace (15 minutes), the Jacobean Chastleton House (20 minutes) and or the 18th-century Buscot Park (35 minutes). For more activities in the throw of it all, there’s Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (25 minutes) and Bourton-on-the-Water’s equestrian centre, brewery and motoring museum (half an hour).
