Les Bulles Perchées de Lartigue

Start an exploration of the Gers region in gorgeous medieval Saint-Mont (half an hour’s drive), where half-timbered houses line steep alleys overlooked by a Romanesque church and monastery. The village is surrounded by historic vineyards, many of which are open for tours and tastings. Lupiac (10 minutes) is another centuries-old hamlet with distinctive cottage façades on stilts. D’Artagnan of ‘The Three Musketeers’ fame was born there, and there is a small museum in his honour. Learn more about the culture of the Gers by tasting regional specialities at local producers. Sample Armagnac brandies at handsome Château de Salles (20 minutes), organic wines at Domaine de Mastric (half an hour), and creamy goat’s cheese at Ferme de l’Hecso (45 minutes), where you can also ride rare-breed Friesian horses. Too chilled to go sightseeing? Hang out on the sandy beach at Lac de Lupiac (15 minutes), where you can top up your tan, take a dip and eat in a tropical-themed bar overlooking the lake. When you’d prefer a bit more activity, make a beeline for Lac d’Aignan (10 minutes), where there are waterslides and treetop rope courses for you to get to grips with.
