A stunningly scenic break in Scotland – with a quick day-trip jaunt over to Belfast and the Northern Ireland countryside for a day trip sounds just tickety-boo to us. This is the flavour of North Rhinns Camping, just six miles from Stanraer and close to Cairnryan to sail straight across to Belfast – it's only a couple of miles from the rocky coast and secluded beaches facing Ireland's north-east side. If you're sticking around on the Scottish side, a wealth of wildlife and nature is around to see – deer and hares regularly roam through the site field, and small and migrating birds are always around as well as buzzards circling overhead. The site surrounds are made up of wild scrubs of heather, whin bushes, willow trees and neighbouring grassland grazed by cattle and sheep. A belt of trees and bushes in the North Rhinns camping field gives most pitches shelter and privacy; all pitches are in separate areas between trees and bushes. The amenities building is modern and has free hot electric showers, wheelchair access, and a wetfloor shower with a shower stool and space for assistance. A good village shop and a bus service to Stranraer and Kirkcolm are at the nearby village of Leswalt.

Positiv It was a lovely and private site, each pitch has it's own space. Our pitch had a hedge on one side and some sort of fence around most of it with only a small portion being open on 2 sides. It was a beautiful and peaceful spot, perfect for relaxing. It was very dog friendly and our dogs enjoyed the space they had on the pitch. It is an isolated campsite but still had easy access to the town and to other walks and attractions in the area. The communal kitchen and bathroom areas were well maintained and we liked the option of books, games and things to do in the area. Overall a lovely spot that we would be happy to visit again.

Positiv Friendly welcome from Ray. Who showed us to our parking spot and where we would be spending the next few days. The pitches for camping are located up a small incline all surrounded by handmade fences, very private and plenty of space between. Our pitch was 6 which had its own outdoor shelter and fire pit, our tent is large and it fit with ease and plenty of space to position. Logs are available to buy very reasonably priced for a large bag. Eggs also available (depends on the Chickens) pizza oven is a must.
The facilities are kept very clean and tidy, with plenty of back up cups, corkscrews etc to borrow, fridge and freezer, kettle and power banks. One shower which again is spacious and clean, 2 toilets one that is accessible.
Ray is very helpful with visiting and touring the area, a very good host.
The site only has 10 pitches which is perfect for a quiet and chilled get-away, the peninsula is absolutely stunning to visit.
The Tor closeby is a very short walk up to, with spectacular views across the valley. But only 20 mins up the road is the Corsewell Lighthouse. 30 mins to the South is The Mull of Galloway lighthouse and tea room. Logan Botanical gardens are easy to do in the same day, the Gardens are wonderful.
Glasgow or Dumfries are a 2hr drive, Ayr is an hour up the road, Stranraer is only 10 mins away with loads of take away options, supermarkets and restaurants.
This site is wonderful for visiting the peninsula or adventuring further.

Positiv The kitchen tent outside the bell tent was a great idea had everything you need loved the arm chairs very Comfy loved the idea of the log burner but we didn't light it. the bed was very comfortable very private and quiet the facilities were very good we were made to fell very welcome

This is wildlife watching land: as well as the birds and animals directly around North Rhinns Camping, the Rhins of Stranraer can have nature watchers spotting seals, spying birds of prey like peregrine falcons, and training binoculars on the steep sheer cliffs to see the likes of guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, gulls, cormorants and shags. Many walks and bike rides are also around the area, both on the waymarked trails of the Rhins and on the quiet roads all around. Several fishing lochs are about too: try Soulseat Loch and Knockquassen Reservoir, sea fishing from the coast, or the River Cree just outside the Rhins. Guests could also visit the Gardens of Galloway, trek around the area's ruined castles and amble around the local harbour villages like Luce Bay, Portpatrick and Sandhead. Stranraer six miles away is home of Stranraer Museum, the medieval townhouse Castle of St. John and North West Castle, the first hotel in the world with a curling ice rink (we hear the Scots are pretty cool at curling). If you're making the day return trip from Cairnryan to Belfast, take the 96 Metro bus or a ten-minute taxi journey to Belfast city centre from the ferry port for a tour of the City Hall, lunch in one of the old city pubs (try White's Tavern or the Mourne Seafood Bar) and an open bus tour of Belfast's historical sites in the afternoon.
