Those who believe back-to-basics doesn’t have to mean entirely no frills will feel vindicated at Stablefell Holidays, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Yorkshire town of Hawes that marries basic stays with the comfort of cosy facilities. Deep in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this scenic spot makes a fab base for nature-filled stays – it's a wildlife haven, about a mile from Lake Semerwater and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve. The former will keep guests busy with watersports (canoeing, sailing, windsurfing and fishing) while the latter will have guests looking to the skies in the hopes of spotting oystercatchers, snipe and whooper swans. The site is dog-friendly too (as long as dogs are kept on a lead), so it’s a good thing that there’s a wealth of lengthy wanders and hikes starting from base, including setting off across fields to the lake, following the River Bain as far as Bainbridge village, and wandering the valleys of Raydale and Wensleydale. If more of a laidback break is called for, that’s handily sorted too: the site is car free – wheelbarrows are available for bringing kit and caboodle from car park to pitch – so peace is not easily disturbed. You'll also be free from the sound of pinging gadgets too, as there's no wifi or mobile phone reception at this site (a bonus for many folk seeking a break from the constant communication of modern life…) Each pitch comes equipped with a firepit for cosy evenings next to an open fire, and the clean facilities and hot showers will ensure guests feel fresh at all times.

  • Das Angebot ist ausschließlich auf Familien (unmittelbare Familienmitglieder) und Paare ausgerichtet. Buchungen von Gruppen anderer Art werden nicht akzeptiert.
  • Es handelt sich um einen Erholungsort: Musik ist nicht erlaubt.
  • Wenn Sie ein Feuer machen möchten, müssen Brennstoffe, Hölzer und Kohle vor Ort erworben werden.
  • Den Gästen wird empfohlen, eine gute Taschenlampe mitzubringen, da das Gelände teilweise unbeleuchtet ist.
  • Feuer, Grills und/oder Feuerkörbe sind unter trockenen, windigen oder heißen Wetterbedingungen nicht erlaubt.
  • All tents must be moved to a different pitch after four days in use to preserve the grass. Please note that to prevent boiler damage, the shower block will not be operational in weather conditions of 2C or below.

Wunderschöner, ruhiger Platz mit geräumigen Stellplätzen, oft mit Feuerstelle. Guter Zustand der modernen Sanitäranlagen, heißes Wasser. Freundliche Besitzer, leckere Pizza. Herrliche Aussicht, gute Wandermöglichkeiten. Wenige Mücken, kein Handyempfang.

Positiv Location was very peacefull and quiet. Very well kept, bays were a good size and all I think had a fire pit. I had an amazing stay their in my 1man tent.
The staff their were great also and even sent me a text asking if I wanted a home made pizza baking for me. I am so glad I had one, after a bit of a drive from Darlington, I needed a good feast. Great idea folks and very welcoming.
Some animals their also such as chickens or roosters, they just potter around near the main block, also some goats and their kids.
Really nice place to just relax or use as a Base for hiking around such a fantastic area.

Positiv - Jo is very friendly and helpful.
- The showers and toilets are very clean.
- You can get a good coffee in the morning.
- The surroundings are so beautiful! There a number of hikes leaving from Marsett, and there are also some nice towns at a 30’ drive.
- The pitches are a nice size.

Negativ There could be a cooking spot for campers with a tent to be able to avoid the wind when cooking.

Positiv The Facilities were lovely and clean. The campsite itself was well maintained and very peaceful and quiet. The Lady who greeted us was very friendly so overall I lovely experience.

Negativ Only thing to point out was how when you turn the shower on water gets all over the floor and wet a lot of my stuff but it was a quick fix.

I just wanted to comment and let other guests know that the reason the shower had leaked is a different guest had sadly just disguarded a razor head cover into the drain instead of popping it into a bin and it had blocked it - causing it to overflow.

We are also looking into popping shower screens in as well to prevent this - however guests dropping rubbish in the drain will still block it. We can only do so much.

Positiv Gem of a site!

The pitches are really big and nicely spaced out. We had other campers on our field but barely noticed them — the spacing is that good. Great thought has gone into the layout, with a really nice use of grass mowing to mark out areas while still keeping it natural.

The site owners strike just the right balance of being friendly while leaving you to enjoy your stay in peace. Fresh coffee is on sale in the morning — a great start to the day. It’s reasonably priced too, and I’d pick it over Costa, Pret, or Starbucks any day.

The location is excellent: a lovely village just 15 minutes down the road, with some great walks all around. These were the best showers I’ve ever had at a campsite, and there’s a little bonus that makes all the difference — boiling hot taps at the kitchen wash sinks.

Lastly, the surroundings are amazing — absolutely stunning views.

Start stays with explores of nearby Hawes, a small town 15 minutes’ drive from the site. This is among Yorkshire’s most well-known spots, home not only to the Dales Countryside Museum, but the Wensleydale Creamery as well, where visitors can take part in tours and demonstrations, and catch up on the exploits of the man-and-dog duo that made Wensleydale cheese so famous. Not much into cheese? Sample other flavours at the town’s Raydale Preserves. For a taste of history, there’s no need to travel all that far either. The site’s just 30 minutes from the 14th-century Bolton Castle and its bird of prey displays, archery demonstrations, wild boar feeding, and castle and garden tours. Slightly further afield are the follies of the Forbidden Corner, the remains of Middleham Castle (Richard III’s childhood home), and the ruined Jervaulx Abbey, all within 40 minutes of base. To experience the Dales’ natural landscape, spend some time outdoors with pilgrimages to Aysgarth Falls (20 minutes), or dive below the surface at White Scar Cave (40 minutes) – the UK’s longest show cave – and Ingleborough Cave (55 minutes). Prefer to spend some time away from the countryside instead? It’s 50 minutes from base to the large market town of Richmond for a day among its museums, castle, falls and art gallery.
