Yorkshire has been voted the top place to visit in the UK at the nineteenth World Travel Awards, voted for by travel agents from around the world.

The other nominees in the category were Scotland, Wales, the Peak District, Cornwall, Cumbria, Devon and Northumberland.

Yorkshire saw over 216 million visitors last year from all over the world, coming to see famous places such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the seaside town of Scarborough, Brontë country, and the historic cities of York and Whitby.

Statistics from January to September last year show there was a 12 per cent increase in visits by international tourists to the region.

Gary Verity, the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: ‘The win is testament to all the thousands of fantastic businesses we have in Yorkshire that time and again put the county on the map for millions of holidaymakers, not just in Britain, but the world over.’

Yorkshire is also vying to host the opening of the Tour de France in 2016, which starts in a foreign country every two years. 150,000 people have already backed the Yorkshire bid.

To see Yorkshire for yourself, we have hundreds of sites in North, South, East and West Yorkshire, from tent and tourer pitches to caravans for hire to lodges, with sites searchable by areas including Scarborough and Richmond, by price, by availability and by 80+ filters including sites which are open all year.
