Nomads exploring the sunny Mediterranean coast shouldn't rule out city breaks when they reach the outskirts of Valencia. Nomadic Valencia Camping Car, a well-kept site in Albalat dels Sorells, makes it possible to head out to Spain's third-largest city for some metropolitan moseying without giving up any of your favourite van life habits. Forget prowling round inner-city streets on the hunt for a parking space – this site is a 10-minute walk from a metro station that can take you right into town in just under half an hour. The train services are cheap and regular, making it easy to come and go as you please. Travel cards can be bought at reception if you don't want to worry about faffing about with self-service machines on the platform. Although Valencia is close by, other outings are likely to appeal too. The beach, for example, is an easy 10-minute drive away; there are also various cycle paths to investigate on two wheels, some of which start right outside the park gates. The facilities both on and off-site are also not to be sniffed at: a laundry room, local produce shop, chillout area and bathrooms with hot showers can be accessed without ever leaving base, while a five-minute walk away in Albalat dels Sorells there's a supermarket, a clutch of shops, an excellent local restaurant and several bars.

Exploring the local landscape by bike is particularly rewarding in this agricultural part of the Med. You stand to see up to 50 varieties of vegetables growing in the surrounding fields as you make for the nearest beaches (or, for a proper calf workout, as you pedal down into the city centre along traffic-free paths). Need inspiration? Tourist information for cyclists is supplied at reception. Valencia (20 minutes' drive/half an hour on the metro) isn't short of state of the art modern buildings – the sleek curves of the City of the Arts and Sciences and Oceanogràfic aquarium are among the most recognisable architectural silhouettes in Spain. There are also plenty of sights for those that prefer their buildings on the traditional side, including the city's 19th-century covered market, 13th-century cathedral and 15th-century silk exchange known as the Lonja de la Seda. Valencia isn't a smoggy city, but if you want some proper fresh country air you'll appreciate a change of scene in the mountainous Serra Calderona Natural Park (45 minutes), the Marjal dels Moros wetlands (25 minutes) or the spectacular Salto de la Novia waterfall (45 minutes).
