As you'll have gathered if you've ever spent time on the Vendée coast, the seaside town of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is a splendid spot. Add to that the hugely fab leisurely options of Camping Les Biches – and it's a family Vendée seaside hol sorted forthwith. Camping Les Biches is four kilometres from Saint-Hilaire, and 10 minutes' drive from the famed sardine fishing village of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie. The region has stacks to do for all ages, from the casino at Saint Gilles to the Atlantic Toboggan waterpark at Saint-Hilaire; for day trips, the fab theme park of Puy du Fou (oh, so much a must) is an hour and 20 minutes' drive east. But back to what's on site… As a cursory glance at the pics above shows, Camping Les Biches is home to a spectacular outdoor pool, edged by palm trees and with slides, a whirlpool bath and deckchairs and sun loungers alongside for fully soaking up Saint-Hilaire rays. It's supervised in July and August and has a separate paddling pool so tiddlers can splash safely too. Among your many other leisurely picks here are sports activities by day and evening entertainment by night all arranged by the site team; puffing around the fitness room or tennis courts, or woodland walks and bike rides in the surrounding 10-hectare forest (hire a bike on site). There's a kids' club too for juniors to sprint off to while grownups repose – on lounger, with book, s'il vous plaît...? As you'd expect, eats and drinks are fully sorted too, at the bar, restaurant, shop and takeaway – should you wish to, you could have your whole hol right on site...

Start off your coastal adventures at Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez for the Atlantic Tobaggan waterpark and the slides, ziplines, trampolines and pony rides of the family park L'ile-aux-Jeux. Then mosey along to the coast's swish resort of Saint Gilles for its long sandy beach and plentiful watersports, enough to keep you occupied for at least a couple of days. And after that? Saint Gilles is a fine fishing spot (charter a boat to bob out from the shore) and is the starting point for ferries to the scenic isle of Île d'Yeu – flocked to for centuries by artistic type. Another top option is the island of Noirmoutier (45 minutes' drive), walkable at low tide via the Passage du Gois. Also recommended are rides along the old railway line via the velorail at Commequiers (15 minutes); the castle, lake and beach at Apremont (20 minutes), and a trip to Les Sables d’Olonne (45 minutes) to watch the boat races, zip along to the car museum and potter around the fishing port.
