If the kids are tiring of pools and beaches, try the Parc des Dunes or Glassy House waterparks, then toddle along to see Vendée in miniature, let them loose on a treasure hunt at Château des Aventuriers, introduce them to the animals at the top-notch Zoo des Sables d’Olonne, or bribe them into the car for a longer jaunt to Puy de Fou, the second-most popular theme park in France (only Disneyland pips it to the post). There’s plenty for the grownups too: get active at Le Grand Défi adventure park, poke around Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie fishing port (there’s a spiffing beach here), spend an afternoon in the weirdly fab shell museum, and head back into the past with a trip to Château de Talmont, all within 25 minutes. Wrap your stay off with a vineyard tour around Brem-sur-Mer – there are three offering tours and tastings within five minutes’ drive of the site and, if you’re willing to travel a little further, you won’t find it hard to find more.
