What does your dream holiday look like? If you pictured lazing poolside, days on the beach and coastal adventures, then look no further than Le Brandais, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the centre of Brem-sur-Mer in the Vendée department of Pays de la Loire.
Anyone who feels more comfortable in the water than on dry land should double check that they’ve added their swimming cossie to the suitcase – the site is less than five minutes from the golden sands of the Brem-sur-Mer beach and, if you want a salt-free dip, there are two (count them, two) heated pools on site.
Want to keep your feet dry? There are roughly 1,000 kilometres of cycling trails in the Vendée and two of them start about two minutes’ cycle from the site, or you can pick up the GR8 Vendée coastline walk and follow it from Brem-sur-Mer to Les Sables d’Olonne, 31 kilometres away.
There’s plenty to keep you occupied back on site too when you need a day off: make sure the kids are taken care of at the kids’ club before you slink off to sun yourself by the pool. Reunite later on for dance classes or to rack up the points in pétanque, ping pong or billiards.
Ready for some munch? There’s a snack bar and takeaway during high season (expect pizza, paninis, chips, mussels and ice cream), and bread and pastries are baked fresh every morning. If you want to cater for yourself, you can fire up the barbie (nab supplies in the on-site grocery or the market five minutes’ walk away) or try a few of the restaurants within five minutes.

If the kids are tiring of pools and beaches, try the Parc des Dunes or Glassy House waterparks, then toddle along to see Vendée in miniature, let them loose on a treasure hunt at Château des Aventuriers, introduce them to the animals at the top-notch Zoo des Sables d’Olonne, or bribe them into the car for a longer jaunt to Puy de Fou, the second-most popular theme park in France (only Disneyland pips it to the post).
There’s plenty for the grownups too: get active at Le Grand Défi adventure park, poke around Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie fishing port (there’s a spiffing beach here), spend an afternoon in the weirdly fab shell museum, and head back into the past with a trip to Château de Talmont, all within 25 minutes.
Wrap your stay off with a vineyard tour around Brem-sur-Mer – there are three offering tours and tastings within five minutes’ drive of the site and, if you’re willing to travel a little further, you won’t find it hard to find more.
