Not too big, not too small, just about right – that’s the idea for the owners at Camping Les Paludiers, in the Pays de la Loire seaside town of Batz-sur-Mer. What that means in reality is a winning combo of the friendly atmosphere and personal welcome of a family site coupled with the fab facilities of a bigger place. Hence there’s plenty here to keep the littlies amused for quite some time: the splendid heated swimming pool has a paddling pool and water play area, there are games of pétanque and table tennis to play and the playground’s made even better with the addition of a bouncy castle. Summer guests will also be able to pick from a range of kids’ activities (for ages 6-12) five days a week, and a bunch of sporting endeavours and trips for the grownups, all followed up with family-friendly entertainment of an evening. Bike hire on site means it’s a doddle to pedal the few minutes into Batz-sur-Mer for eats, but if you’d rather stick around on site you’ll not go wanting, as there’s a bar, pizzeria, snack bar and barbecue area, along with a small grocery shop in summer. And those wheels may well come in handy for outings too, heading out to the beaches (the closest sandy stretch being a mere 100 metres away) or meandering through the salt marshes around Guérande, 10 kilometres away.

With the gorgeous Baie de La Barrière beach a couple of minutes’ walk away you may be tempted to settle on the sand for the duration, but if you’d like a little activity while you’re there, there’s a sailing school a few minutes’ trot along the sand. And if you’d like to mix up the beach views a bit, there are other fab stretches nearby: perhaps bike to La Govelle in 10 minutes or to the enormous swathe of sand at La Baule Escoublac in 20. Get a glimpse of those that lurk in the sea at the Océarium in Croisic, 15 minutes away by bike – more than 2,000 marine beasts hang out here, including sharks and penguins. Wildlife in its natural habitat can be spotted at the Brière Regional Natural Park, half an hour away, perhaps best toured on a traditional chaland boat... It’s worth stopping off in Guérande, 15 minutes’ drive away, to wander through the medieval streets and take a tour through the surrounding salt marshes. A museum charting the area’s salty past is in Batz-sur-Mer (as is a miniature golf course for small sorts with less tolerance for history).
