Bordering the Meuse and Marne departments just outside rural Chatel-Chéhéry, Camping Les Naïades is a family-friendly Ardennes site set in peaceful countryside on the edge of the sprawling Argonne Forest. There’s something for all generations to get stuck into here, whether it’s laps of the pool, fishing for decent-sized carp on the pond, challenging new-found pals to pétanque games or watching the kids brave the pump track – and almost everyone will adore the chance to meet friendly goats and donkeys at the mini farm. Useful practical amenities are as follows: a spotless shower block, baby-changing facilities, dishwashing sinks and a laundry room open to all. On-site services include gas bottle sales, and you can hire bikes to explore the leafy Ardennes countryside. Food-wise, you’re covered too, with an artisan bread delivery service, a cosy bar and seasonal menus in Bistrot Chéri (normally open weekends, daily in school holidays). If you’re just after a snack, head for the coffee shop, and if you’re short on supplies, local products are sold in the shop; there’s also a weekly market in summer. Keep a look out for the organised entertainment: karaoke, dinner dances, themed meals, pool parties and a kids’ club are among the activities, as well as special events like St. Patrick’s Day (March 29) and a vintage car show on August 23/24 each year.

Em va agradar Large pitches. Very quiet but it was March. Looks like a great site for a family holiday and pool upgrade looked like near complete. Nice hot showers and clean modern facilities.

Llocs d'interès

First off, a bit of local history; you can’t visit this quiet corner of the Ardennes without stopping at 12th-century Cistercian Chéhéry Abbey (five minutes’ drive), slowly being brought back to life by local volunteers; guided tours highlight the renovations, honey-bee hives and the burgeoning vineyards. Châtel-Chéhéry is also known for the bravery of US soldier Sergeant York in World War I; the long-distance GR14 hiking trail follows in his footsteps through the Argonne Forest. There’s more military history for you to check out at the Musée Guerre et Paix (an hour), packed with army jeeps, tanks and vintage uniforms. Closer to home base, you can also pay your respects at the gleaming-white Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial (15 minutes), with its neat ranks of crosses marking thousands of graves. If the kids are tiring of ‘old’ stuff, pack a picnic and head for La Hardonnerie (15 minutes), an animal sanctuary where you can feed wild boar, cuddle donkeys and collect fresh eggs from the free-range hens. Argonne Discovery Park (20 minutes) is highly recommended too, as it’s home to endangered wolves in spacious forest enclosures.
