For some folk, Oban is a jumping-off point for trips to the spectacular Scottish islands; for others, it’s a very handy location simply for sinking into the gentle pace of rural Highlands life while still keeping convenient access to shops and other amenities. Whichever of those groups you fall into, a fine base awaits at Oban Holiday Park, a spacious and peaceful site in Gallanchmore, about 10 minutes’ drive south of the Oban. It’s a scenic spot indeed, with views out over the sea to the island of Kerrera (which you can take a closer look at by boarding a ferry less than a mile away). There are plenty more options for island hopping from the harbour in Oban, whether you’re doing a grand tour or just taking day trips. The town also has a good collection of shops, restaurants and things to do, including a cinema and golf course – not forgetting the option for a stroll along the seafront at sunset, watching the boats bobbing in the harbour. Staying here isn’t all about the islands, of course – there’s a whole heap of things to see on the mainland too, including castles, gardens and a whisky distillery. Activities are plentiful too, with pony trekking and scuba diving close by as well as a good choice of places to go for walks and bike rides. On site, all is nicely convenient too, with a small food shop, chemical disposal and modern toilets and showers; there’s also a play area where the kids can have a good run about. The site is supported by natural water springs, so you'll need to boil any water you intend to consume or drink bottled water instead.

Em va agradar The easy access to Oban, the beaches, the water. The shop is well stocked, the campsite was lovely, with nice secluded areas to pitch although we were not in an electric pitch. The staff were helpful and friendly. Good play park for kids.

No em va agradar The shower blocks could have been cleaner, they regularly blocked. The pitch sites were on slight hills which meant you had to get the right spot to pitch.

Em va agradar Peaceful site with good toilets and showers. Nice area for dog walking and park for children.

No em va agradar No set pitch so if you went off the site in your motor home you either had to leave something behind or have a different pitch every day. The water had to be boiled before drinking. No privacy from others. Free WiFi only near reception.

Nice views and relatively quiet site where you can choose your own…

Em va agradar Nice views and relatively quiet site where you can choose your own spot from a select of areas on the site. Particularly enjoyed the Highland cows wandering by in the morning.

Em va agradar The ground was nice and level

No em va agradar Disappointed that there were no disabled facilities. No mains water to fill up the motorhome tank. Steep steps to the tiolets with no handrails. I thought that £35 was a bit steep for it's facilities. Wont be visiting again. Very narrow road not really suitable for motorhomes and caravans.

Good for a short 2 night stay before moving on

Em va agradar Easy going place. No one bothers you. Quiet. Very close to the ferry to Kerrera which is worth a visit. Nice views. About a mile out of Oban on single track road.

No em va agradar Not actually a dislike. However you should know that the camping facilities are very basic. Only two toilets and wash basins but clean. One dishwashing sink. There is a basic kitchen with a microwave. Field is a slight slope. Not connected to the water supply so no safe clean water is available. Water is direct from the hills.
At £25 pn for non electric camping pitch it is a bit pricey.

Worst site we have ever stayed at.

Em va agradar It was close to the ferry port.

No em va agradar This was by far the worst site we have ever stayed at in Scotland! The touring pitches are on a hill. Its like you are basically parking in an uneven field with no marked out pitch. We had concerns about getting stuck as it was very wet in parts and our motorhome was sinking into the mud. The pathways are limited so we were trudging through wet grass/mud to get to the toilet block. The water supply is from a spring so you can't drink it. The shower water was running through brown so we were glad it was only a one night stay. No wifi or phone signal. It needs some serious upgrading for tourers...definitely won't ever be back.

Llocs d'interès

Getting out to see the surroundings? There are lots of lovely walks to be done nearby, or you can hire bikes in Oban (10 minutes’ drive) for scenic cycle rides. Achnalarig Riding Stables (10 minutes) is another option, for pony and horse riding lessons or treks – or you might like to see what’s out at sea by joining a scuba trip from Puffin Dive Centre (five minutes’ walk). Once you’ve viewed Kerrera from your pitch, head up the road (five minutes’ drive) to board a ferry over to the island – there’s a great seven-mile walking trail that runs from the harbour and will show you some of the island’s best bits. For other islands, it’s a 10-minute drive to Oban harbour, where services run to Lismore, Mull, Iona and Coll as well as more far-flung destinations. Back on the mainland, you may like to stop by at Dunstaffnage Castle (20 minutes), the Green Shoots garden (15 minutes) and Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre (35 minutes) – and don't forget a dram at Oban Distillery (10 minutes)…
