Wimborne Fishing Lake

‘Helpful’, ‘friendly’ and ‘lovely’ are words that crop up time and again in reviews about the team on site at Wimborne Fishing Lake – and that’s surely a reassuring thing to see for anywhere you’re planning to spend your hols? As well as being a friendly place, this Dorset site is also well-located one, in a quiet spot just outside the market town of Wimborne and easily accessed from the A31. As the name suggests, pitches here are set within the grounds of a private fishing lake that’s stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Guests are welcome to spend some time fishing while on site (for an extra cost), with rods to hire on site if needed. Each day ticket entitles you to keep one fish; after that you can continue on a catch-and-release basis or buy a further ticket to see if you can catch more. Those fish are likely to be at their tastiest when grilled over flames, so if you’ve had a productive day you’ll be pleased to hear you’re welcome to light barbecues and campfires at this site. If it wasn’t your day or you fancy a night out, it’s an easy 10-minute stroll into town for pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Away from the lake, there are lots of nice walks around (particularly if you wander into the water meadows), and the site is a handy base for all sorts of Dorset days out including Knoll Gardens, Kingston Lacy and the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park. Facilities on site are minimal – there are no showers or electric hookups but guests will have access to portable toilets.

Wimborne’s a cute little town to wander around – and possibly even cuter still if you find its miniature cousin at Wimborne Model Town, 10 minutes’ walk from the site. If you’re after rather grander views, aim for the swish mansion and gardens at Kingston Lacy (five minutes’ drive) or potter along the paths of Knoll Gardens (10 minutes). Properly rural rambles can be had on the trails around Moors Valley Country Park (25 minutes), a huge open space where you can also follow the play trail, ride on a steam railway, scramble across the Go Ape course and come face to face with a Gruffalo. Other nearby options for those with nippers in tow include ruffling cute animals at Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (15 minutes), hurtling down the slides at Splashdown waterpark (15 minutes) and seeing the big beasts at Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park (25 minutes). No kids in your party? Maybe a tour, tasting or vineyard picnic at English Oak Vineyard (10 minutes)?
