It’s all about connecting with nature at Ruby Country Camping, where children under the age of 14 get to stay for free. Owners Marc and Dinah have set things up ‘the way we would like a campsite to be’ – and that’s based on many years of their own camping experiences. Now settled in rural west Devon, they’re the custodians of this peaceful and eco-friendly site in a five-acre meadow that’s lined with trees and has a little brook gurgling its way along the southern boundary. There are only a handful of guests allowed on site at any one time. Plus, much of the space has been left as nature intended to make sure that the wildlife is as happy here as the humans. That also means plenty of space for everyone to chill out and enjoy the fresh air; each pitch also has its own campfire area so alfresco times can still continue even if it’s a bit chilly. Logs are available to buy on site, and for anything else it’s a two-mile trip to the supermarket in Hatherleigh (which also has several pubs and takeaways for those who’d like to delegate cooking responsibilities). Being eco-friendly doesn’t mean giving up on some comforts, so there are hot showers, flushing toilets and compost loos on site, but no electric connections or wifi. But who needs wifi when there’s so much great stuff to see and do nearby… the Tarka Trail and Coast to Coast bike route are close by, and this handy central location means that it’s equally easy to get to the beaches of north Cornwall or the trails of Dartmoor.

Aquest és un càmping ben cuidat i tranquil, amb parcel·les espaioses i els amfitrions acollidors, Marc i Dinah. Els hostes lloen les netes i excel·lents instal·lacions de lavabos i dutxes, destacant molts la dutxa exterior. El lloc ofereix una gran zona de jocs per a nens i comoditats útils, incloses cuines ben equipades en opcions de glamping. Tenda piramidal Lotus

Em va agradar There was everything to like about this place. Amazing tent, plenty of space for a family of 4, comfortable bed, brilliantly stocked kitchen, the loos and showers were lovely and clean and the outside shower was simply a joy. The play area for the children to run around and play was brilliant and there was ample space for everyone to relax and enjoy. Loved it. Marc and Dinah were lovely, great local recommendations for beaches, cafes and places to explore.

Em va agradar Such a wonderful campsite! We loved everything about it. Everything has been so well thought out and the facilities are nicest and cleanest I’ve ever come across in my many camping trips. The outdoor shower is just dreamy and is already missed! The hosts are so warm and welcoming. The play field is so well set up and fantastic for children or grownups! We loved how the pitches were set up as it really felt like you had your own private space and each one was a really good distance from the other. Over all a beautiful site, with fantastic facilities and pitches. A must visit!

Em va agradar Dinah and Marc are wonderful hosts. Excellent communication and welcoming. It’s easy to find. They let me choose which pitch I would like. There is loads of space between pitches. The showers and toilets are very clean. The shower is hot and there is a charging port for phones. The grass was soft enough for me to pop the tent pegs in easily, despite the recent heatwave making most ground hard. Going the extra mile is what they do really well.
I’ve been before, it’s like coming home. Thanks again!

Em va agradar Everything. The campsite was lovely, beautifully maintained, loads of things to keep the kids entertained.

Marc and Deana are a lovely, welcoming couple that have a great passion for the environment and keeping everything eco friendly.

No em va agradar The only thing that I could comment on, and it is a real third world problem, is that there is no where to dry your hands in the washrooms so take a towel when you pop to the loo!

Tear up the skate park, take to the adventure playground or head out onto the Tarka Trail… there’s access to all three in Hatherleigh (five minutes’ drive or 10 minutes’ cycle along a bike path). It’s one of a couple of splendid places close by to this site, which includes the Legge Farm Coarse Fishery (five minutes’ drive) and the War Horse Valley Country Farm Park (10 minutes) for families who fancy getting stuck into farm activities and a World War I museum. Woolley Animals’ (25 minutes) alpaca walks are another activity for any wannabe farmers. Meanwhile, nearby the pretty Clovelly (40 minutes), you can swap tractor rides at the BIG Sheep farm park (40 minutes) for the Milky Way Adventure Park's bigger coasters (40 minutes). After some hikes, wild swimming and other outdoorsy types of activities? Dartmoor National Park (20 minutes) is a good choice on that front. More paddles can be tracked down on Bude beach (half an hour), where there’s a sea pool and surf schools. For some sightseeing instead, set off for Okehampton Castle (15 minutes) or the spectacular gardens at RHS Garden Rosemoor (25 minutes).
