Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds. Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk. On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground. When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away. If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

Em va agradar The site area is well maintained

No em va agradar Left after 1st night. The sewage smell coming from the toilets was too much. Could not use the toilets or showers because of the awful smell , it made you wretch. I was physically sick with smell

Em va agradar Tidy camping area, fully serviced pitch if required. Private pitches.
Onsite pub food is nice.

No em va agradar The smell of the toilets was awful even when sat eating outside there was a smell
Of foul sewers. The shower block was not very clean either.
It was ok for 1 night but I don’t think I would stay for longer.
Some pitches are quite tight to park in due to a hedge opposite.
WiFi connection was very bad

Em va agradar Lovely pub on the front, and nice private pitches

No em va agradar Toilets constantly smelt of sewer water, there was no hot water for washing your cooking items and only 1 toilet. There was on site WiFi, but it never worked to be able to use

Lekker eten in de pub.
Vriendelijk ontvangst door het personeel van de Dartmoor Halfway inn.

No em va agradar Sanitair, er is 1 toilet, dus soms moet je even wachten. Dat was echter geen probleem

Em va agradar Pitches were large and private.
WiFi was good

No em va agradar Entry to site was via a bell and only during the pub opening hours of 8am to 10pm. Sometimes between those hours you could wait 5 mins for the barrier to be lifted. A better system is needed.
The drains smelt quite bad during our stay.
There weren't enough toilets for all on site.

Pub manager was rude.

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended. Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.
