All the best things are woodfired... See if that holds true at Woodfire at Westerlands, a family-friendly site in the South Downs National Park, 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Petworth in West Sussex.
The trails of the South Downs are within easy reach of Woodfire at Westerlands: a track leading directly from the site will bring you onto the 90-mile South Downs Way, which you can walk, cycle or follow on horseback.
If you’re not all tuckered out from your rambles, keep activity levels up back on site: see how you stack up in a round of the Finnish throwing game Mölkky... then stroll to one of the several pubs within walking distance for a post-game pint.
Woodfire at Westerlands is based on a farm, but this might be one of the fancier farms you've ever seen, with an outdoor sauna and a plunge pool. It also has a treatment room for massages (to arrange these, you will need to request them at the farm). On the farm, horse-riding activities are also on the agenda. If you'd rather dabble in some paddleboarding or kayaking, the gorgeous river Arun is a short drive away from base.
Foodwise, guests are excellently catered for here: quality woodfired meals are regularly cooked for guests and, if you don’t feel like mingling, you can fire up your own barbecue (then laze around a campfire under the stars).

Ease into wider adventures around the site with a soothing afternoon’s fishing at Duncton Mill Fishery or with a round of golf at Cowdray Park Golf Club, both 10 minutes from the site. For a touch more relaxation, head towards sandy beaches: West Wittering beach (40 minutes' drive) and East Wittering Beach (40 minutes). Pebbly beaches are also dotted around the coast.
Continue your getaway with some history. For this, the Weald and Downland Living Museum (20 minutes) is well worth a visit. It's where the BBC's The Repair Shop is filmed. Plus, with lots of indoor and outdoor spaces, it's got lots to see whether the sun shines or not.
History buffs whose interest has been piqued by all the stately homes should make sure to get to Bignor Roman Villa (15 minutes), Amberley Museum (20 minutes) and Sussex Heritage Centre (25 minutes).
Watersports, anyone? Chichester Watersports (20 minutes) is a lake setting with inflatables, water-skiing and kayaking activities and a zipwire. For days out with small kids, make your way to Fishers Farm Park (20 minutes), a petting farm that runs pony rides and a mix of other activities, from quad-biking to tractor and trailer rides.
