It’s not every day you get to pitch up among fruit trees, so grab the chance to do just that at Frittenden Orchard, where off-grid grass pitches are scattered in orchards on a Kent farm near Staplehurst. For even more of a back-to-nature vibe, you can wander the 11-acre woodland wildlife haven around the camping fields, where you might get to see foxes, badgers and deer. The site owners are happy to suggest local walks and sightseeing ideas for you. Free-range eggs are available from their own hens (just think of the breakfast fry-ups…). As this is a simple campsite, there’s no electricity but you will have a wifi connection and ice-pack freezing to keep your food fresh and chilled, as well as charging facilities for your devices, so you can keep in touch with the outside world. You can barbecue meals on grills brought from home, and pick up locally sourced produce from the handy store in Frittenden (five minutes’ drive), but if you’d rather someone else did your cooking while you’re away from home, there’s also a smashing pub in the village serving yummy burgers and local beers.

Em va agradar A lot of space, clean and spacious toilets and showers, nice location. Sissinghurst gardens can be reached by foot in 30 minutes. Take the route apple maps gives you, google maps takes a huge detour.

Em va agradar We had the best few days camping here. When we arrived we were only 1 of 4 other campers it was fantastic. Great views and so much space.
Lovely new clean facilities. Campsite was quiet and well kept.

Em va agradar Plenty of space, new, clean facilities. The fruit trees make a nice edge to the camping field. Didn't feel like we were crammed in even though it was a late booking on an August weekend. Book ahead for the local pubs.

Em va agradar Lovely, quiet and peaceful campsite with loads of space in a beautiful plum orchard setting. The amenities were all clean and modern. A really relaxing place to stay — would definitely recommend!

The owner was friendly and very helpful.
The facilities are great. Nice hot, clean showers.

Leeds Castle (25 minutes’ drive) has a host of activities, from guided tours to jousting tournaments and raptor displays, to keep families entertained all day. There are rose gardens to wander in Sissinghurst Castle Garden (10 minutes), and at moated Scotney Castle (25 minutes) you can follow trails through landscaped parkland. There’s more active stuff to do too; kids with energy to burn can wear themselves out on zipwires or mountain-biking trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (20 minutes), or on the inflatable course at Bewl Water Aqua Park (25 minutes). Younger children can cuddle the cute creatures at Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats (20 minutes), and any rainy-day issues are taken care of by the indoor pool at The Weald Sports Centre (10 minutes). If you’ve treated the kids to their day out, you deserve some me-time too. How about heading into Royal Tunbridge Wells (40 minutes) to browse indie shops or lunch in the cosy bistros of The Pantiles?
