Family run and family friendly, Wimbish Hall Cabins is a swish glamping site based on a working arable farm in the Essex village of Wimbish, surrounded by fields of grazing horses and with a couple of friendly dogs about the place too. On site all is peaceful and calm, while the shops, pubs and restaurants of pretty medieval Saffron Walden are 10 minutes’ drive – and another world – away. Sleeping up to six, the contemporary log cabins are heated and insulated to keep everyone cosy no matter what the weather is doing. Proper beds come with all linen supplied, kitchenettes have all mod cons, and the airy interiors have ample space for dining tables and sofa beds. Each cabin has private decking with seating, and looks out over a two-acre lake, so in contemplative moments you can fire up your exclusive-use woodburning hot tub and have a soak while taking in the views – on clear days you can catch spectacular sunsets too. All guests have access to a laundry cabin with washing machines and tumble dryers; please bring your own laundry detergents (and don’t hog the machines). If you prefer to dry your gear alfresco, washing lines and pegs are provided at the cabins.

Em va agradar: Comfortable, new wooden cabin in lovely location. Wood fired hot tub was much appreciated. Everything was super clean and well thought out. The owners couldn’t have been more helpful.

Em va agradar: The facilities were fantastic everything you needed for a great stay was available. The fire making for the hot tube and the log fire was so much fun and the private outside space was so good to enjoy your own time. The beds were super comfortable and the shower was lovely and warm.

There’s more history in Cambridge (40 minutes), with its ancient soft-stone university colleges, punting on the River Cam and arty attractions – maybe make time to visit the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle’s Yard. On holiday with the kids? Check out the sea lion displays, big cats and chimps at Colchester Zoo, or encounter life-size animatronic dinosaurs at Paradise Wildlife Park (both 55 minutes). Combine family strolls in Capability Brown-designed gardens with a tour of the Victorian-era kitchens and dairy at Audley End House and Gardens (40 minutes), and then treat well-behaved youngsters to a ride on Audley End Miniature Train (15 minutes). Head off any groans if you hit a rainy day by making for the trampolines at Jump Street Chelmsford (45 minutes), or take a couple of turns around the rink at Cambridge Ice Arena (40 minutes).
