Families, couples and even the family dog, get ready to strike gold. Popular Golden Square Touring and Camping Park on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park is an absolute gem of a site – safe, scenic, spacious, well-maintained and with enough to do to keep guests of all sizes busy for days. Once the kids are persuaded to leave the two outdoor playgrounds, indoor play area, pitch and putt and football field, countryside walks and trails start direct from the park; seaside frolics at Scarborough and surrounds are an hour away, and a sports centre with indoor pool is five minutes’ drive down the road. Those who prefer to take to two wheels can hire bikes on site and ask the Golden Square owners for info on the best cycling and mountain bike trails in the area; there be loads. Away from the hum of activities, Golden Square has glittering little touches all over: two luxury stonebuilt and heated toilet and shower blocks – previous winners of the local Loo of the Year accolade – as well as two disabled/family bathrooms. An on-site licensed shop sells caravan accessories, toys, games, groceries and essentials like bread and milk (it sells daily newspapers and homemade cakes too; a golden opportunity for afternoon relaxing in the sun, perhaps…). Pitches are warm, sheltered and kept secluded by specially planted trees, hedges and shrubs; the park has also been designed on three levels so that even in the height of the summer season it doesn’t feel crowded. And as it’s North Yorkshire, the views at Golden Square are gold-standard too: moorland, forest and farm stretching all around and into the Yorkshire moors.

Em va agradar Loved this site from start to finish.
It is busy but clean, organised and well spaced on touring pitches.
Super friendly team
Quiet - so so quiet on a night. I loved this given how busy it was.
2 fantastic play areas which the kids loved and felt really safe.

Well stocked shop
Clean functional bathrooms.

Coffee van came both days.
We will be back!

No em va agradar Minor point but we were given a pitch near a stone water tap and fire point. We were able to manoeuvre in but it did mean constant people coming to the pitch to fill water, brush teeth and empty water. What was weird is the other pitches were empty so we could have had one of them? Strange.
Pitch was quite challenging to level but we managed it.

Em va agradar Size of pitch.
Warden was seen out and about and tried to make sure play area was closed by 10.

No em va agradar Conditions in the toilets, but this was not due to the staff it’s the disgusting people staying on the site, very clean on arrival but the site was very busy and by evening they were disgusting. Playground very noisy until late.

Em va agradar Great site perfect for exploring the local Helmsley area. Toilets were clean and showers really good. Park was perfect for our 6 year old who loved playing on them and making freinds.
The leaving at 12 is a really useful for a chilled pack up and gives plenty of time to sort your breakfast and plenty of time to pack up.

No em va agradar We were a bit far from the toilets. When arriving you can’t turn up early and must get there for the time told as the barrier doesn’t work until the time of access.

Em va agradar It’s a great campsite. Well run. Lots for the kids to do. Great shop and shower facilities. Lovely location.

No em va agradar I had read reviews prior to arriving about the ground being hard. I expected this to an extent given the lack of recent rain, but it’s almost like it’s a layer of topsoil on top of pure concrete. We really struggle to anchor the tent. It would’ve also been nice if onsite campers received a small discount to use the padel court as I felt £24 was steep to have a game with my son. I’d also love it if you were able to add a charger shed of some kind so that we were able to charge phones etc out of hours.

Em va agradar There was such a lovely, family feel to the park.
Everywhere is spotless, the whole park, the toilets, washing up area, everywhere.
The staff were so friendly and helpful and we had a lovely relaxing few days.

No em va agradar Not a dislike but I feel that an additional football field would be great.
My grandson is nearly 6 and football mad so the field was perfect but we had to prise him away at times as the older kids wanted to play as they should be able to!
So not a dislike but it feel that another pitch would allow ALL to play at the same time.

Em va agradar Good facilities although could have done with some further up the site as it was a long way to walk to the toilet block.

No em va agradar As above shower block tok far away and no bin area other than near to reception.

Staff were quite militant when it got to 10pm which is quite early for the summer holidays. We went as a group of friends and family with kids but felt like we were treated like a bunch of 18 year olds who were going to cause bother. Other than that it was a pleasant stay

Golden Square Touring and Camping Park is above Ampleforth village which has two village pubs serving meals and snacks (and ales); several more pubs as well as restaurants and cafés are available in the market town of Helmsley, a few miles away. The 110-mile Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley, looping around the North York Moors National Park and ending at Filey via the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. Endless other outdoor opportunities in the 554 square miles of the North York Moors National Park include pony trekking across the moors, rock climbing, and off-road driving… a mere few of the pursuits here to suit all tastes. If you prefer a more peaceful time, professional fly fishing tuition is to hand close to Golden Square and fishing lakes are at Castle Howard, Terrington and Hovingham; for golf, five courses are within 12 miles including Gilling Castle two miles away, Kirkbymoorside within six, Easingwood 10 miles away, and Malton and Thirsk within 12 miles.
