Day out in Cambridge or some time spent wandering around the countryside? Either one is equally possible for guests staying at Shepreth Mill. This Cambridgeshire site is just under 10 miles from Cambridge city centre but also surrounded by lovely rural landscapes to explore. Getting around should be nice and straightforward – and you’ll have options too. The A10 passes just by the site, as does a new cycle path running all the way to the city (it’s all lit up at night so don’t worry about staying in town for a drink or some food). Shepreth village is a mile away, with a train station for those who’d rather get around by public transport. The village also has a tea room, and there’s a pub a few minutes' walk from the site too, but for more eating options and shops you’ll need to head to Melbourn (five minutes’ drive) or on to Royston (10 minutes). When not out and about, you’ll be staying at a pretty site that’s got a river bordering two sides and a lake within the grounds. The lake is a good place for wildlife spotting, as the island has ducks, moorhens and swans on it at all times; look out across the river Shep, meanwhile, and you may spot the residents of the badger sett on the other side. If you fancy a lengthier exploration of the river, you can stroll along the waterside path that leads to an RSPB reserve in one direction and a good coffee shop in the other. Simple facilities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Em va agradar Nice chap, not the owner, directed us to a spot with electric, near the fence away from a tight row of caravans on gravel pitches.

No em va agradar Felt more like Glastonbury with a fire on the ground nearby and gathering with noise later than advised. Caravans close together. Here’s the pain. “Paid via Pitch up” only to discover we hadn’t paid in full. Polite message from female owner to this effect but we explained we were unable to access bank accounts due to poor signal. Phoned the messager who advised we could pay as soon as we had signal. Next, nasty message from Tony saying if we didn’t pay he’d sully our names and we’d never get a pitch up site again! Said we were absconders despite having made arrangements to pay once we had a signal.

Em va agradar good sized and beautifully cleaned showers with good heat adjustment and pressure.
Really kind and friendly staff and people who stay on the site.
Can walk to the local village and a couple of pubs from the site.
Small site so easy to navigate

Em va agradar Proximity to Cambridge and convenience of taking train into the city. Good dog walks nearby.

No em va agradar Site VERY overcrowded to the pint we could not have driven out of the site easily had we wanted to. It would also have been a struggle for emergency services to enter. Pitches were too close. Electricity cables were being split at multiple points. It was the weekend of the Duxford Airshow and it felt as though the owners were being greedy and cramming as many vans and tents onto the site as they could. This resulted in the facilities being inadequate. Water pressure at washing up point was too low and there was little if any hot water there. Very close to A10 which is a busy main road so there was road noise, this did not disturb us. Owner was empathetic to concerns about space and we were fortunate to be put on a more spacious pitch, the same cannot be said of his wife however. She was dismissive of our concerns.

Em va agradar Very friendly hosts, large quiet field with choice of placing. Although no flat pitches it is possible to position so van is level. Pub serves pizzas and also brew their own very palatable beer.

Em va agradar The location, about a mile from Shrepretstation, 15min. walk along the river Shep. From there a short trainride to Cambridge. Basic but clean sanitary facilities.

No em va agradar On arrival, at first no pitch available for us. Although we had a confirmed reservation from Pitchup. The very friendly lady of the campsite managed to find a good place for us. She blamed Pitchup for the miscommunication.

While you’re up in Shepreth (20 minutes' walk), stop in at Shepreth Wildlife Park to meet all sorts of exotic animals including tigers, aardvarks and red pandas. The same amount of walking in the opposite direction will take you to RSPB Fowlmere to see native species instead. It’s likely you’ll spot some wildlife while out and about too – the walk from Barrington to Haslingfield is a particular favourite, with great views over Cambridge too. For a closer look at what Cambridge (half an hour by car or public transport) has to offer, spend a day (or more) in the city, dipping in and out of the colleges, visiting the museums and taking a boat trip on the river. To see some more fabulous buildings, plan outings to the National Trust estates Wimpole Hall (15 minutes), centred around a splendid 17th-century mansion, and Anglesey Abbey (half an hour), which also has gorgeous gardens and a woodland play area. Audley End (25 minutes) is another lovely estate that’s well worth a visit.
