There are many reasons why one might fancy settling down by a river – perhaps for the fishing, the views, the wildlife… maybe even the chance to get in the water. Happily, all of the above are on the cards at Avon Wild Camping, a peaceful Warwickshire site on the banks of the River Avon 15 minutes' drive from Leamington Spa. There’s a mighty pretty stretch of the river running alongside one side of this site, making it a prime spot for kids to paddle and catch minnows in the shallows (under supervision, of course) or for grownups to pick up permits (available on site for an extra charge) to try their luck with the chub, pike, grayling, roach and brown trout that swim in the waters. It’s a popular part of the world with wildlife too, so settling down by the river with binoculars and/or a drink also comes highly recommended. All is very laidback around here: it’s a pick-your-own pitch place, with heaps of space to choose from around the 12 acres of meadow. Being a back-to-basics site, there are no electric hookups, but there is access to limited (but clean) toilet facilities, showers and running water. As this is an eco site, the toilets run on rainwater, guests are strongly encouraged to recycle and, without wifi, the kids are free to focus on playing by the river. Alfresco meals can be cooked up at the campfire area; there are firepits and kiln-dried timber available if you need them. Pick up supplies for such things at the farm shop a mile away; it’s also got a café for coffee, cakes, pizzas and other meals if you’d rather eat out. There are several good country pubs nearby too, or you could scoot into Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes’ drive) for more places to eat and drink.

Un càmping relaxat, estil "acampada salvatge", amb molt d'espai i accés directe al riu (llits elàstics, ideal per nedar i jugar). Em va agradar We have been here 3 years running now. It is our favourite place to camp. We love the freedom and how welcoming to owners are. One thing we witnessed was that the owners helped some people whose tent was flooded in the middle of the night and provided somewhere better for them to sleep than their car in the rain storm. This was a wonderful thing to do. We will 100% be back next year!

Em va agradar I loved it. Basic wild camping which is what i wanted. Like the addition of the showers. Big shout out for tom who winched me out of the ditch!! Nothing was to much trouble so thankyou tom.

No em va agradar I think it would be a good idea to renovate the toilets as wall paper is all pealing off probably better to use a water proof covering.

Em va agradar First time camping as a family of 5. Turn up and set up where ever you want. This site is ran by ANPR camera and Tom the owner will message you with details the day before arrival, he will give you his number if any problems but we didn’t need it. Big field along the river with 4 toilets, 2 showers and a washing up space. Perfect for wild camping/back to basics which is exactly what we were looking for. Everyone was spaced out and friendly. We had plenty of space to run around and play games and also swim in the river. There’s a few swings dotted round for the kids. We had a bbq and a fire on the night. You can purchase wood on site too which we didn’t need to. We had a great sleep, even had a lie in. Overall we had a great stay, the weather played a big part by staying warm and dry and we are definitely coming back!

No em va agradar It was very loud at night and the price for this place is too expensive, because the washing rooms and toilets are very old!But tbh the small river next to the camping was very beautifull.

Del gerent: We have a no music policy, if you’re looking for complete silence I would recommend staying during the week… not during the 6 week holiday, when we’re fully booked on a Saturday night during amazing weather ☀️ you’ll find every beach, leisure park & place with cold water to cool off will be just as busy on the weekend

Em va agradar Beautiful campsite, lots of open space, well sheltered with very little noise. Really easy access to the river for wild swimming, with shallow parts suitable for toddlers. Pitches are relatively flat. Gorgeous wildflowers. Very little light pollution on a clear night so great for stargazing. Easy drive in to Warwick/ Leamington/ Coventry for activities or supplies.

No em va agradar Could do with a second sink for washing dishes, and showers being separate to toilets as they become very damp after someone has used them.

Em va agradar Fresh air, good family environment, kids enjoyed playing in the field, swimming and a swinging on the tree. The bathrooms were clean. Also enjoyed the cooking and grilling in a natural environment with the sun shining

The big draw around here is Warwick Castle (15 minutes’ drive) – it’s well worth a proper day out to explore the dungeons, take in the shows, get lost in the maze, see the birds of prey flying, wander through the 64 acres of the estate… oh, and visit the castle itself, of course. For something just a little less expansive, head instead to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes) or stroll around the pretty Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes). Coventry (15 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes) are other good options for urban days out; try Ryton Pools Country Park (five minutes) or Stoneleigh Deer Golf Club (over the road) if you’d rather stay rural. If you need family days out, take bouncy kids over to the Jump In trampoline park (15 minutes), or get set for farm-based fun among the animals, play areas, funfair rides and escape rooms at Hatton Adventure World (25 minutes).
