If a laidback wild camping break is just what you need right now, Lathkill Wild Campsite is likely to tick a lot of boxes. A peaceful Peak District location? Tick. Views over hills? Tick. Dog-friendly and relaxing? Tick, again. Many guests return again and again for this site's friendly and welcoming atmosphere, as well as the convenient location. On the edge of the village of Over Haddon, it’s only a 10-minute car journey to get to Bakewell, one of the top visitor spots in the Peak District National Park. Peaceful, wild-style camping is the vibe here, and that carries over into the facilities. A toilet (with no toilet paper), fresh water, firepits for hire and firewood for sale make staying here an experience that's both convenient and hands-on. Overlooking Lathkill Dale and with far-reaching views over the surrounding area, many circular walks and bike routes await close by. And on the food front, the site is about a mile from an award-winning pub, which is easy to walk to, and the village also has tea rooms, public toilets and a bus stop serving local destinations. For anything a bit bigger in scale (like supermarkets, A road access and museums), you'll want to head in the direction of Bakewell (10 minutes); the similarly sized spa town of Buxton (20 minutes) has a heritage trail, spas and shops.

Em va agradar - Lovely location surrounded by fields and cows, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting

- Great base for exploring local walks and villages in the Peak District (specifically Bakewell for their infamous tarts!)

- Clean, well maintained toilets

- Friendly and helpful owner, who came out to meet us and check us in on the evening that we arrived

- Our second night was much more peaceful and enjoyable

No em va agradar - Our first night was unfortunately quite unpleasant

- A Glastonbury-style trio played very loud dubstep until around 10pm, then continued talking and laughing VERY loudly until around 2am. It was very inconsiderate of other campers

- Our overall experience was heavily influenced by the behaviour of the other campers, not to be dictated by the campsite itself

Em va agradar Great campsite very close to a super market. Had an amazing time in the Chatsworth Country Fair this campsite was quite close to it had a nice time camping although we didnt stay long it was a reallt nice campsite if we are in the area again we will definitely be coming back.

Em va agradar Views of beautiful surroundings, stone walls, fields and woodland. Lots of cows.
Toilet and sink cubicles do the job perfectly. Outdoor sink was great too.
Open landscape and overall a perfect place to pitch up. Even got a visit from two farm cats. Enjoyed our stay very much and will defo go again.

Em va agradar For positives, there were 3 toilets and a washing up sink. The site was also beautiful with countryside views all round and cows next door. The pitches weren’t sectioned so we could pick wherever which we liked.

No em va agradar Unfortunately, around 7pm the farmer came over to check us in, and informed us on a campfire/bbq ban. We had not been made aware of this ban, and one of the main reasons we picked this site was for campfires being allowed (noted on the PitchUp site and on email too). We believe a campfire is one of the best parts of camping, as we use it to cook our food, and keep everyone warm.
If we had been informed of the change of policy prior to our stay, we would’ve cancelled, however we ended up spending a lot of money and drove around 2 hours for this site just to leave before dark. It’s such a shame, we just wished communication was better from the site. An email for the change of rules, or even the farmer checking us in at the start instead of 5 hours later after we set up. It just ruined our whole experience, and we went home very unhappy.

Em va agradar Very spacious area with beautiful views and nearby to some really nice locations. Would absolutely recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the area. Couldn’t have a fire due to the national ban but that would have perfected the stay!

A Peak District break should always include a visit to Chatsworth House (20 minutes’ drive). This country house has over 25 rooms, including a painted hall and sculpture room, and the grounds are just as splendid – here you can take the kids to meet the pygmy goats in the farmyard, and play at the adventure playground, eat according to the season at the estate’s restaurants or take a buggy tour. Haddon Hall (15 minutes) is another nearby historic house, with a medieval park that can be explored on guided tours. And there’s Matlock (20 minutes) close by too – it was once an ancient spa town and now a gateway for bike rides, hikes and the lot. If staying active is high on your priorities, a visit to the Hathersage Swimming Pool (25 minutes) is the place to practise your backstroke under the open sky. You’re bound to get in some steps around Alton Towers (40 minutes) too, running between rides. Dovedale (30 minutes), of course, is a place for more traditional hikes – the valley is almost three miles long, and there are stepping stones to cross on your way around this scenic stretch of land.
