If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Em va agradar Nicely laid out site, clean and tidy. Great for families with play park, swimming pool safe cycling for younger children.
Toilets clean and well maintained.
Handy for the Tissington trail.

If levelling is an issue for you then the hard standing would be best.

No em va agradar The porter loos on the camping field were disgusting! The smell and cleanliness was horrendous. The toilets and showers by the kids park were much better!

Em va agradar Lovely site great location, second time I’ve stayed with my grandsons as a stopover on my way to Scotland staff friendly and helpful with the cycle path and local pub serving great meals.

Em va agradar The park and swimming pool were great and clean.

No em va agradar The toilets were too much of a walk when you have small children. Also walking through a wooded area when it’s pitched black isn’t nice.
The portaloos that were the only option in the field we were in were absolutely disgusting. They smelt and were full. My children constantly asked what that smell was as we could smell them in our tent.

Em va agradar Lovely site. We stayed in one of the new bell tents which were brilliant. Our daughter enjoyed the space to run around and very much enjoyed the swimming pool and playground. Proximity to the Tissington Trail was a bonus so we could cycle to Ashbourne and Tissington. Lovely traffic free relatively flat route perfect for our daughter who is still leartto cycle. Lots to do in the area as well. The staff at the site are also very friendly and cannot do enough to help.

No em va agradar The bell tents are certainly new and I get the feeling the field they and additional camping are in is new as well. In the future I hope they add a toilet and shower block with washing up facilities to this field as it was a little bit of a walk to the other block to do washing up or have a shower. The Portaloos for the bell tents were brilliant though.

You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
