Rural rambles without having to leave base – bag a berth at Blaithwaite House, 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Wigton, for a taste of life on a Cumbria country estate. And not just any old country estate – this one stretches for a generous 200 acres, bringing with it 50 acres of woodland to frolic in, and a walking trail that covers over two miles (Yes, it’s a big place, so best be picking up a map before striding forth.) Enjoyed that warm up? More walks, bike rides and other outdoorsy pursuits are 10 minutes’ drive away in the Lake District National Park or 20 minutes away on the Solway coast. Time to catch your breath? Settle in on site for splendid views over the Solway Firth or to cook up something tasty at the barbecue and firepit area (shop ahead and you can stash your supplies in the site’s fridges and freezer). If cooking doesn’t appeal, decamp to a local pub – two such establishments an easy five-minute drive away serve up homemade food. Still got energy to burn? Play areas, a football field and a playing field offer plenty of space to let off steam. If you’ve got a gaggle of buddies on hand, book ahead to mercilessly hunt them down with a game of laser tag… but whatever you get up to, don’t forget to give a cheery wave to Snowy the goat and her chicken pals. The site may be sizeable, but facilities aren’t far-flung – washing-up areas and individual toilets and showers are in the pitches field and supplied with hot water from the eco-friendly biomass boilers.

喜欢 Nice grass pitches with plenty of space even on bank holiday weekend. Clean facilities. Great bar with entertainment and lots of things going on. Logs and fire pit delivered to your tent. Great friendly staff/owners.

喜欢 Excellent site for families! Kids had a wonderful few days and made some lovely friends on the football pitch

Food vans were a great extra

喜欢 Views across the valley. You can camp as a group. Back office staff friendly and helpful when there was an issue with booking.

不喜欢 Water disruption on two days out of 7, WC in same unit as shower so had to queue when busy morning and evening. Floor of the shower/ WC units frequently wet and muddy. Cleaned most days in morning but weren't cleaned on a Tuesday so ran out of hand towels and toilet paper in many units. While cleaned in the morning, the shower/ wc units were mucky by lunchtime especailly when raining. Pitch on a slope and even with levellers could not get the van level. Across the whole site a lot of general maintenance needed- broken toilet seats, broken locks, broken hinges. Crazy golf clubs broken, pool table: white ball kept getting stuck. No coffee on bar as machine broken, playgrounds showing age and wear, including protruding nail heads where wood had broken away.

喜欢 Great campsite. We chose it because of the location- it is close to both Lake District and Hadrians Wall. The showers were clean even though it was very busy (school holidays). There is woods to walk the dogs; it’s quite big and the paths are clean. There are a few play fields for those with children as well. There is a pub where you can grab some drinks and they have a pizza van on certain nights.

They pre-allocate the pitches so you don’t have to worry about squeezing between tents.

不喜欢 You cannot park by pitch. You need to leave the car in the car park. This is usually a dealbreaker for us, but they let you load and unload by the tent so we didn’t mind.

喜欢 The site is fantastic, with good on-site facilities. Toilets and shower were clean, and the shower warm. Lovely on-site playgrounds meant the kids made friends and had somewhere to play. Easy journey to lakes and lots of useful info about walks. Staff really helpful - moved pitches around so the two families were next to each other. We ordered a firepit and everyone was helpful setting up and providing sufficient firewood to keep it going. Pitch is flat, and everything is easily walkable. On-site bar is useful too!

喜欢 Lovely place to stay! Well maintained grounds, plenty for the children to do. My youngest daughter had an accident (no fault of the place) and the owner helped with everything. First aid, directions and come to see us the next day, just to check on her. The staff were all fabulous! All very helpful. Plenty of space, lovely views. Close to plenty of things also. All round a lovely few days again. We will be booking back up very soon

As well as the hiking trails of the Lake District National Park, active options nearby include Bassenthwaite Lakes, 20 minutes’ drive from base, where there are lakeside paths, boat hire and tours and tastings at Lakes Distillery. Derwentwater, half an hour away, has kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing; you could also get out on the water on an Ullswater Steamer at Pooley Bridge (access 40 minutes' drive away at Penrith), cruising by some of the area's highest peaks. Historical highlights are plentiful in the region too: Carlisle Castle and Mirehouse House and Gardens are both within half an hour, Gretna Green is 40 minutes away and the remains of the great Hadrian’s Wall are reachable in about an hour. Try something a little different at the Rheged Discovery Centre, 40 minutes away, where there are cafés, craft shops and a six-storey cinema screen, all in the UK’s largest grass-covered building.
