With the Lake District National Park on one side and the North Pennines National Landscape on the other, Croft House Camping is in a fabulous spot for getting out to explore the Cumbria countryside. Mind you, the pop-up camping field here has its own lovely views over the Eden Valley too, so you don’t have to be out and about to soak up the scenery. Just outside the tiny rural village of Cliburn, this is a peaceful and dog-friendly rural site that’s part of a livery yard. There are only a handful of pitches here, so you may well find that the resident horses and hens are your closest neighbours. The pitches are level and sheltered by dry stone walls, with easy access for vehicles. They’re spacious, too, so you’ll be able to get an awning or gazebo set up and have space for a barbecue and a couple of camping chairs. As a simple pop-up site, facilities here are pretty minimal, but you’ll have access to water and a chemical disposal point as well as a toilet on the livery yard (bring a torch for nocturnal wanderings; it gets pretty dark around these parts). The local village is a very small place, so for shops, pubs and the like you’ll want to head to Penrith or Appleby-in-Westmorland (both 15 minutes’ drive away). Also within a similar distance are the outer edges of the Lake District National Park and attractions including Lowther Castle. Closer to home, there are a couple of lovely walking areas nearby at Cliburn Moss and Whinfell Forest – wild areas where you might spot red squirrels and deer from time to time.

喜欢 Beautiful site.
Owners couldn’t have been nicer!
So calm, so peaceful, lots of space. Facilities were basic but so clean! Loo was clean, no shower but hot water in the washroom area.
Felt like the middle of nowhere,
Super quiet.
Booked to trial our tent for the first time, owner Richard was super helpful and definitely felt if we needed any assistance we could have knocked and asked!
Easy to find and access!

喜欢 Loved the setting, the scenery, the horses (especially holly) and Sofi (the 7yr old) loved the lady Gemma and wants to come back just because of her because she was so kind. We will definitely come back.

喜欢 Loved the elevated position on a very quiet plateau of ground which was easy to put pegs in!
I enjoyed a really nice stay and a lot of practical information given in person.
Gemma and Steve were very good when I hit a problem with mobile signal on under Tesco provision. And when there was an emergency, I had to collect my children late evening over 2 nights. I somehow work out how to cater for them (3) after only expecting to have come alone with a crysalis of a solo tent and on a Sunday evening. Lot's of time to help me work it out and I think a genuine check on making sure everything worked well with that on site.
What I really felt good about was letting people be clear about their rules when necessary, which made me feel safe having the children there, due to daily checks.

不喜欢 The site is perfect for us since my children and I get involved enough in the basics to need other sorts of entertainments like play areas or lots of other children, but some may find that less manageable. Was nice that the children will play better since it is a small enough field.

喜欢 Lovely flat field. No set pitches which we liked. Very peaceful, nice views. Great host.

不喜欢 A bin would be good but we managed okay. There wasn’t many staying when we were there but another loo would Benefit I on busy days.

喜欢 The space was fantastic and the views lovely. Was back to old school “camp where you want” and lots of space to play!
Lovely woodland walk very close.

不喜欢 Sadly only 1 toilet which could be an issue if busy, there were only 4 units on when we were there so was ok but can imagine if full it would be “in demand”
No bin facilities so you have to find somewhere to deposit your waste, make sure you have good bags as it is going in your car - feel a bin would be a good addition!

To get to Townhead Lane, go to the crossroads in Cliburn, then take the turning marked 'Temple Sowerby'. Townhead Lane is a private road 200m along on your left, next to Glebe House.
