Hear that sound? It’s the quiet murmur of the River Eden as it flows just a few yards from your grass pitch at Eden Escapes, a wild-camping site on a farm deep in the Cumbrian countryside. Easily accessible from the road, this quiet open field is surrounded by rolling grassland and has only sheep and cows for neighbours. On hot summer days, guests may find refreshing comfort in the river, where they can swim, paddle and relax before heading into the historic market town of Kirkby Stephen, just over a mile to the south. The pretty village of Winton (a similar distance away via local footpaths) has a friendly pub and a playground. The views from Eden Escapes are truly spectacular, with sweeping vistas over Wild Boar Fell and the peaks of the Pennines (both reachable within a 20-minute drive); day trips to Yorkshire Dales (15 minutes’ drive) and Lake District national parks (40 minutes) also easily doable. In terms of facilities, this is a simple spot with portable toilets and running water. The farm is a pretty laidback place to be – well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you here, barbecues are permitted and campfires are allowed in the designated areas.

喜欢 Quiet, relaxed, great location with the river right next to the campsite

不喜欢 Only one toilet is the only thing I would change, when we were there there was only one other tent there but I imagine if it was busy you'd be waiting sometimes. It was kept lovely and clean though so I have left it at 10 stars.

喜欢 It's an empty field with a portaloo, a sink and water. Fire pits and BBQs allowed. The kids love it because they can run around and do their own thing. It's not a massive site but it's closed off and you can see everywhere. It's a mile or so into town. It's nice if you want to get away and chill.

喜欢 We love to come here, beautiful quiet field, amazing views & some animals and a short walk to the streams to play in. We've been coming yearly since our daughter was 2 weeks old and she's now nearly 5.

喜欢 We liked everything about the campsite, we were allowed to leave our car as we were walking from Shap to Kirby Stephen (C2C) field was highly maintained, quiet and out the way from busy road, picnic bench and firepit, we could not of asked for more as a campsite. Thank you Amanda.

Built in 1861 to carry the railway across Scandal Beck, the Smardale Gill Viaduct (15 minutes’ drive) cuts a remarkable figure with its 14 imposing arches. The surrounding landscape of woodland and grassland is home to rare species of butterflies, plus birdlife such as green woodpeckers and sparrowhawks. In the North Pennines National Landscape, High Force Waterfall (40 minutes) is created by the River Tees tumbling 70 feet down a granite cliff edge. A half-hour walk downriver leads to the smaller Low Force Waterfall and the Wynch Bridge across the water. The visitor centre in the nearby village of Bowlees has lots of useful information on local trails. The dramatic ruins of 19th-century Lowther Castle (40 minutes), in the Lake District, seem to emerge right out of lush woodland. Wander through the colourful flower-filled gardens, and keep an eye on the events calendar, which includes tours and talks about gardening, beekeeping and art.
