Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline. From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Flushing toilets, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use. Raised firepits are allowed on site; along with firewood, the firepits are available from the site at an extra cost. (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside). This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

喜欢 Really nice owner, and a nice flat patch with a hedge end barrier, and it had toilets, showers, sinks and WiFi! 10 minute walk to a very good pub!

喜欢 Loved that it was just a field with a couple of toilets and showers and the complete darkness!

Fire pits are great and on can also buy the bag if logs with everything you need firefighters kindling included! Also loved the free range eggs for sale!

喜欢 We were greeted with a friendly warm welcome by the owner, he took time to show us the facilities and how everything worked. If you want a reasonably priced pitch with a fantastic friendly host, this is the place to stay.

喜欢 flat pitch, nice grass no muddy patches. Host is great, went out of his way to have a campfire w/logs and Firestarter's out for us despite arriving at 8pm. great facilities, toilets and showers, hot water and small charging station. Responds immediately via his number, very helpful and great guy. Signs are clear, we were driving in the dark found it no problem. Right next to wast water, me and two mates camped to climb scafell then snowdon same day.

喜欢 Flat, clean site.
Owner was very friendly and was there to say goodbye to us even when we left quite early.
Showers were very warm and great pressure perfect after a long day up Scafell Pike.
Toilets were clean and stocked with all of the necessary supplies.

喜欢 Peaceful area with a couple of pubs not too far away. Nice views. Campsite also offers the necessities. Hot showers, place to wash pots and pans, a good number of toilets. Host was excellent and is always saying hello and greeting people. Highly recommend and would stay again.

喜欢 Perfect campsite in an absolutely stunning location with 360° views to die for! Plenty of space, flat pitches, great facilities including an undercover area for washing up, drying clothes, and meal prep. The owner is really friendly and knowledgeable, he recommended lots of great walks (and pubs) nearby and things to do away from the crowds. As we were there towards the end of the season it was very quiet - just us and the chickens during the week! Thank you for a magical stay, we will definitely be back.

喜欢 Jonnty was an amazing host, he was extremely helpful and went above and beyond, even offering an alternative date as the weather forecast wasn’t looking good. We decided to stick with the plan anyway and had a great time despite the wet weather. The field has good solid ground so didn’t become waterlogged meaning we kept dry. We made sure to utilise the very handy sheltered drying rack for wet clothes.

The location is beautiful and peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas of the Lakes.

Facilities are great with a good number of toilets and a shower, you can tell they have been thoughtfully constructed with automatic lights etc.

10/10 would recommend this excellent value campsite.

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses. If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes). There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times. Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.
