Heading off into the countryside for a walk or two? Or perhaps hoping to ride bikes along quiet lanes? Stay at South Yorkshire’s Broad Close Farm, just outside the village of Silkstone, and you’ll be able to stroll (or pedal) straight out into woodlands or onto rural pathways. And there’s more… this small and well-maintained site is handy for getting out to or set out to see intriguing places like Pot House Hamlet and the historic site of the Huskar Pit disaster. The Silkstone Waggonway is close by for more cycling and strolling days, and more intrepid bike riders might like to note that this farm is just off the Trans Pennine Trail (roughly at its halfway point, in fact). And of course, the Peak District National Park is but a few miles away… If that all sounds a bit too energetic, you can instead tour the area by train from the local station (10 minutes’ walk away and part of the scenic Penistone line) or hail a bus from the village. All sorts of attractions are close by too, including farm parks, stately homes and the national coal mining museum. Being rural doesn’t mean being cut off around here: a walk of five minutes or so will get you up to the village for two pubs, a steak house and a small supermarket (perhaps to pick up supplies for an evening by the barbecue or campfire back at the farm?)

喜欢 Really nice quiet secluded spot. Good walks and countryside. Easy walk into village with good pubs/food. Pre book recommended. If not Dominos deliver.
Toilets are good and functional.

喜欢 ***1st time Camping in a tent***

As our 1st time camping in a tent, me and my boys loved how open and quiet the site was, lovely views, woodland walks, cows, goats and chickens.

Loved having a fire to roast Marshmallows.

Very easy to get to, friendly owners. We would definitely come again.

不喜欢 No power (but we managed)
Shower block and washing up area over the road (just a bit hard if a lonely parent and young children, again I managed well)
Toilet block on camp site non powered (only solar lights, just remember a torch)

喜欢 Very relaxed site and been able to use a fire pit was a bonus.

不喜欢 The toilets in the field are quite smelly and not very clean even for a wild camping site. The main toilets and showers near the farm are better but could do with a bit of tlc.

喜欢 It was a peaceful place, and there were quite a few other children there aswell. My daughter loved seeing the different animals there and she sat talking with the goats for a while, the staff were all friendly and welcoming.

不喜欢 There were 3 toilet blocks, one at the bottom of the field and the other 2 were near reception, it was great having so many toilets, as a bigger lady, I found the field toilets and one block near reception to be quiet small cubical. Although the toilets in the shower block were ample size, so its not a massive dislike. Other than that, nothing was wrong.

喜欢 Lovely views and location. Close to village pubs we even found an Indian restaurant. About a mile from motorway so perfect even for an evening stopover.

This is a great area to explore for those with an interest in history – you’ll get a real feel for times gone by if you pack in outings to Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive), the National Coal Mining Museum for England (20 minutes) and the excellent Elsecar Heritage Centre (20 minutes), where you can see craft workshops, old ironworks and a steam railway. If you’d like to take in more of the area’s lovely views, head to Holmfirth (20 minutes), the epicentre of a network of great walking routes, or take a stroll around Wentworth Castle Gardens (10 minutes). For more of a challenge, it’s a half-hour drive to Bleaklow mountain; meanwhile, for a much easier ride, it’s 20 minutes to Kirklees Light Railway. And if your rural outing isn’t complete without some cute furry animals to coo over, you’ll need a trip to Cannon Hall Farm (10 minutes), which has an adventure playground and farm shop as well as lots of new farmyard friends to meet.
