On the southern fringes of Yorkshire Dales National Park, Draughton Heights Campsite is a peaceful spot a 10-minute drive (or a one-hour stroll along an old Roman road) from the market town of Skipton. It attracts hiking enthusiasts, who have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing walking trails; however, it's also popular with families. Whether you’re here as a rambler or (especially) with kids, you should appreciate the well-maintained amenities block, a solid structure of Yorkshire stone with separate male and female toilets, showers and baby-changing facilities. Just take note that due to the elevated position, the site can be windy. There is a small additional fee for canine guests, and they must be kept on a lead while on site so as not to spook the sheep in the nearby fields; however, you don’t have far to go to find dog-friendly walks around here. Try walking along the River Wharfe to Bolton Abbey, for example, or climb up Beamsley Beacon, from where you can take in expansive views of the surrounding moors. Three habitat lakes on site ensure a pretty constant stream of animal visitors, from deer to owls and other birds. Open lakes are on site if people want to enter at their own risk; life buoys are for emergency use only. You’re welcome to fire up a barbecue, but as a family site, quiet hours are from 10pm each night. In Skipton, a market takes place four times a week (including Saturday), and there are shops in Addingham and Silsden (10 minutes’ drive for either) for more supplies.

喜欢 I stayed at Draughton Heights towards the end of October and absolutely loved it. The location is stunning — set high up in the hills with amazing views, especially at sunset. Because it’s so elevated, it can get quite windy, and it was definitely cold at night, so pack plenty of warm layers if you’re camping late in the season!

The site felt very safe and well maintained. You can park right next to your pitch, which is really convenient, and the facilities are excellent — spotless toilets and showers, plus a small kitchenette area with a communal kettle, fridge, freezer, and washing machine. Everything was clean, modern, and well looked after.

The campsite is tucked away off a quiet country road, and the track leading up is unsurfaced, pebbly, and a bit rocky, so just take it steady on the drive in. There are also two lovely lakes on site, perfect for a swim in the summer months, and plenty of open space to relax and enjoy the views.

It’s worth noting the site is unlit (apart from the toilet block), so bring a good torch if you’re heading out after dark.

Overall, a beautiful, peaceful spot with incredible views and great facilities — I’d definitely stay here again.

喜欢 Lovely hillside location complete with swimming ponds, beautiful views, friendly owners, spotless facilities and a sauna - what’s not to like?! They also allow fires and don’t force you to buy their wood which is a nice change.

不喜欢 Nothing - it’s fab - just worth just noting that it’s about an hour’s walk or 10 min drive to the local shop/pub.

喜欢 We honestly loved this campsite, we both went “woah” when we went into the really warm and clean bathrooms and showers, there were really good, surprising facilities like a warm room to wash up and play equipment. It’s also not often you can book a sauna on a campsite. They were so friendly and helpful and it’s really beautiful.

Take a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Bolton Abbey station (10 minutes’ drive) is a recreated 1800s building with a vintage café where you can sample delicious homemade cakes. There is a lively calendar of events at the railway, including afternoon teas, murder mysteries and steam-driving experiences. An Augustinian priory established in the 12th century, Bolton Abbey (15 minutes) now sits in ruins on the River Wharfe, where a series of stepping stones allow you to cross the way workers at the priory used to cross. There is also a bridge for when it’s deemed unsafe to use the stones. The spa town of Ilkley (15 minutes) is overlooked by a vast area of wild moorland, just to the south, which includes features like the Cow and Calf Rocks and the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle. In town, there’s a playground in the Riverside Gardens and a child-friendly nature trail through the Darwin Gardens.
