Venture to Lower Vessons Farm for a nearly-wild experience at a site in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. The surrounding area is coveted by walkers, with a wide network of footpaths to follow, including one leading to the rocky Devil's Chair outcrop at Stiperstones National Nature Reserve. The scenery here is also stunning: choose your spot in the 16 acres of dense woodland or on one of the vast fields. According to the owners, the main attraction here is having a back-to-nature break without any noisy neighbours (and they've spaced the pitches a whopping 50 metres apart to make sure that's the case…). Given the level of seclusion, there are no roads on site and access is over grass. If the weather causes problems, the owners and their vehicles are on hand to help get you on and off the grounds. The nearest pub is a mile away (if you wish, opt for the nice countryside walk, which takes about half an hour through the fields and woods). Other takeaways and restaurants are within a few miles, as is a local butcher's, a bakery and a small grocery shop in Pontesbury. As part of the wild experience, this site has cold showers and portable toilet facilities. It welcomes campfires (in a firepit only), barbecues and dogs. Guests are also welcome to bring their horse to the site for an additional fee (simply add it as an extra when you book – hay and straw are included); there are some stunning trail rides in the area.

喜欢 Everything. The site is well maintained, in the middle of what feels like nowhere, bustling with wildlife. It’s extremely peaceful and spacious. For the price, I feel I’ve been spoilt with a toilet, water and cold shower. What a bargain. The owners seem wonderful, they gave me clear directions and info upon booking which was much appreciated. Can’t wait to return, would absolutely reccomend

You’re not crammed around other campers

喜欢 perfect stay, the pitches were far apart from each other. Due to the hill we couldn’t even see who was sharing our field with us. So nice and secluded with amazing views and great walks from the site. Loos were nice and clean and the family running the place are so kind and welcoming. Will definitely be returning!

喜欢 Location, amazing views, good access to walking paths, ultra-basic and informal. Just what I was looking for. Plenty of space, which is important, given that in a hilly area finding a level pitch might be tricky at busy times. But look at the view!

不喜欢 Not the easiest to find, and phone signal is patchy, so make sure you know where you're going before you get off the beaten track. The track from the road is long and very rough, so wouldn't be great for cyclists. Bring some supplies with you as local shops are not close.

喜欢 Great location and price.

Encouraged to pitch well away from other pitches.

The views were pretty, the people friendly and the portaloo clean.

不喜欢 Camping fields on hillside so hard to find a level pitches at all, quite steep for sleeping.

There was a lot of camp junk where I pitched - tent pegs, a lighter, cigarette butts, ground fire pit full of ash.

No evening check that rules being adhered to by everyone.

Follow the signposts for camping up the lane for half a mile to reach the site.

It’s the walking trails that will lure you to this part of the world – the moorlands of Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (40 minutes' drive) are particularly popular for pottering around, while the Offa’s Dyke Path is prime for long-distance roams. Mountain bikers can make for Eastridge Woods (15 minutes’ walk), which is well known for hosting mountain-biking competitions. It has trails that are free to use, whether you’re a beginner or an expert cyclist. If you love history, you're in a good locale too. Head to Snailbeach Lead Mine (20 minutes' drive) for a half-hour walk through the countryside and to see what's considered to be the most complete lead mining site in Britain, with surprisingly well-preserved engine houses, blacksmith's shop and recognisable spoil heaps across the valley. Shrewsbury (half an hour) next? The medieval market town has plenty more history, and you don't need to dig far to find it… the timber-framed black-and-white houses and steep, narrow passageways known as 'shuts'. If you're feeling brave, you could visit Shrewsbury Prison to try out the escape rooms or take a guided tour of the Victorian-era jail led by former officers. Afterwards, wind down with a walk along the River Severn at the pretty 29-acre Quarry Park.
