Views around the site

  • Family-run site with well-spaced pitches and countryside views
  • In a rural location in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape
  • Pick-your-own spot stays on a nearly-wild park run by helpful owners
Venture to Lower Vessons Farm for a nearly-wild experience at a site in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. The surrounding area is coveted by walkers, with a wide network of footpaths to follow, including one leading to the rocky Devil's Chair outcrop at Stiperstones National Nature Reserve. The scenery here is also stunning: choose your spot in the 16 acres of dense woodland or on one of the vast fields. According to the owners, the main attraction here is having a back-to-nature break without any noisy neighbours (and they've spaced the pitches a whopping 50 metres apart to make sure that's the case…). Given the level of seclusion, there are no roads on site and access is over grass. If the weather causes problems, the owners and their vehicles are on hand to help get you on and off the grounds. The nearest pub is a mile away (if you wish, opt for the nice countryside walk, which takes about half an hour through the fields and woods). Other takeaways and restaurants are within a few miles, as is a local butcher's, a bakery and a small grocery shop in Pontesbury. As part of the wild experience, this site has cold showers and portable toilet facilities. It welcomes campfires, barbecues and dogs. Guests are also welcome to bring their horse to the site for an additional fee (simply add it as an extra when you book – hay and straw are included); there are some stunning trail rides in the area.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked This place is a gem! Proper camping … just fields and firepits! Listened to the cuckoo, bullfinches and long tail tits twittering in the bush! At the top there’s a route straight up to the stiperstones, and the dog loved the space. Price was spot on … what’s not to love. And the portaloo was the cleanest one I’ve ever seen… soap and toilet roll!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Peace and quiet, huge pitches with ability to have a small extra tent, camp fires allowed, great communication from owners pre arrival, birdsong at dawn and stars at night

Disliked Would prefer a proper toilet/shower block but that might have the downside of making it busier

Liked Lovely views and plenty of room. The owners meet you at the gate to help you find where to go, lovely people.

Disliked It is a bit tough on your car getting to the fields but I guess if you want true peace and quiet this is the price you pay.

Local attractions

It’s the walking trails that will lure you to this part of the world – the moorlands of Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (40 minutes' drive) are particularly popular for pottering around, while the Offa’s Dyke Path is prime for long-distance roams. Mountain bikers can make for Eastridge Woods (15 minutes’ walk), which is well known for hosting mountain-biking competitions. It has trails that are free to use, whether you’re a beginner or an expert cyclist. If you love history, you're in a good locale too. Head to Snailbeach Lead Mine (20 minutes' drive) for a half-hour walk through the countryside and to see what's considered to be the most complete lead mining site in Britain, with surprisingly well-preserved engine houses, blacksmith's shop and recognisable spoil heaps across the valley. Shrewsbury (half an hour) next? The medieval market town has plenty more history, and you don't need to dig far to find it… the timber-framed black-and-white houses and steep, narrow passageways known as 'shuts'. If you're feeling brave, you could visit Shrewsbury Prison to try out the escape rooms or take a guided tour of the Victorian-era jail led by former officers. Afterwards, wind down with a walk along the River Severn at the pretty 29-acre Quarry Park.
