Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets and four cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

喜欢 Great campsite, very peaceful, and the fantastic combination of great views and flat pitches, a combo which feels hard to come by! Loos and sink are well cared for, and beautiful walks nearby. We have been before and we will definitely come again. Thank you!

喜欢 We love the big open views and you can get a good phone signal up there . Also the toilets always been nice clean when we have been . Also I like the cold shower especially in this heat.

不喜欢 It would be nice if they had a Elson point for the chemical toilet.

喜欢 Open field, no shade, spotlessly clean portaloos, bins around site provided and emptied daily, fresh water provided, back to basics, relaxing site.

不喜欢 A little out the way,(I had no transport this time) but within a cars distance to Wallingford and Benson

喜欢 Its exactly what you would expect and thats simple camping. Great you can pick your pitch but its more like a section and plenty of room. The owner popped over at night to say hi and thats a nice touch and she allowed us to check in early which helped.

Toilets are clean and it was in a good location

不喜欢 Not a big one but the showers are ice cold

喜欢 This is a back to basics camping. The field was quiet but had a light breeze which was just perfect. With the weather so hot the cold shower was also very much appreciated.

不喜欢 Nothing. It was quiet and peaceful and the weather was dry, what more do you need.

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
