When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. The site also sells woodfired pizzas, which should be handy if you fancy eating something more substantial.

喜欢: Exactly as described. Lots of space and facilities were really good. The Saturday burger van was perfect for what we needed although it was a shame the pizza van had closed up shop at 8:30pm.

不喜欢: Nothing really - site was pretty noisy but all quietened down at the requested 11pm - so no complaints there.

喜欢: Beautiful views, relaxed atmosphere, friendly and helpful owners. Big site but very spread out and even though it was busy never felt cramped. Toilets and showers clean and functional and even though lots of campers there were no queues that we saw. Fire pit hire available.

不喜欢: Large site so furthest pitches are a fair way from the toilet blocks but this is made up for by having the best views over Lathkill Dale.

喜欢: Everything. Lovely farm run by a lovely couple. Wonderful camping and touring choices. Great toilets and showers, very clean. Supplies can be bought on site; fresh milk, eggs. Firepits for hire. Fantastic walks. I can't rate the wifi because I used mobile data. A haven for foragers... comfrey, watermint, watercress, marjoram, yellow archangel in abundance down by the river.

喜欢: love everything about this campsite, so relaxed, plenty of space and the owners are both lovely. our favourite/go-to place to go. couldn’t recommend more. plenty of clean brand new showers and toilets and also fresh hot food on site at weekends. the shop is also great has local food, drinks and essentials you may have forgotten.

喜欢: A friendly welcome at the reception/ shop from the owners. Plenty of options for tent pitching aswell as hot and cold running water. Great campsite with excellent facilities. Saturday night pizzas sold on sight at a reasonable price.

喜欢: Fantastic views with a choice of fields to pitch up in. Clean modern toilet and shower blocks easily accessible from all fields. Owner was really friendly and helpful. Great recycling facilities. Annie’s Kitchen and wood fired pizza options on Saturday evening.

不喜欢: Would have liked a cover over the washing up facilities in case of rain.

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
