Lake View Yurts

Find your way to a friendly farm site that’s well set for days out around Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset thanks to a handy location near Mere, at the point where the three counties meet (and close to the A303 too, for those of you looking to stop over on a longer journey). Once you’ve parked up at Lake View Yurts, it’s an easy couple of minutes’ amble across a small paddock to find your secluded self-catering accommodation. You’ll be staying in a fully insulated and locally handmade yurt that’s surrounded by farmland and bordered by woodland. As you may expect from the name, there’s also a fine view down to the lake and the hills beyond. A warm welcome awaits here, not just from the owners but also from their dogs and other animals (including a small flock of sheep plus pet pigs and a pair of alpacas). The yurt is in its own quiet corner of the estate but the owners live on site so there’s always someone around if you need anything during your stay – such as some home-reared lamb or pork to cook on the barbecue perhaps? The yurt is most welcoming too, raised up on a wooden platform with a gas barbecue, chimenea and picnic table outside and a double bed, sofa bed, woodburning stove and kitchenette inside. Mains electricity means that you can keep all your devices charged (handy for planning your days out) and make that all-important cup of tea. A compost toilet, electric shower and sink are housed in your sole-use bathroom, housed in a recycled shed 10 metres away.

One of the handy things about meeting the owners on site is that they can give you all sorts of tips on places to visit nearby – and in this case that includes a fine list of local pubs, restaurants and food shops, so have a chat when you arrive to find out where you should be eating nearby or picking up supplies for back at base. In between those meals, you might like to boost your outdoor time trying to hook some carp at The Islands Fishery (five minutes’ walk) or a round at Bullpits Golf Club (10 minutes’ drive). The farm is just on the edge of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for walks, or you could head out for strolls around Stourhead (10 minutes), Old Wardour Castle (25 minutes) and Montacute House (35 minutes). Other options? Maybe a city day in Salisbury (40 minutes) or Bath (45 minutes), a safari day at Longleat (20 minutes) or a trip to the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis (an hour).
